The University of Karachi (UoK), established in 1951, is one of Pakistan's largest and most prominent public federal universities. Located on Main University Road in Karachi, Sindh, it serves as a premier centre of higher education in southern Pakistan with a student enrolment exceeding 24,000. The university is chartered by the federal government and is recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan.

UoK offers a diverse range of programmes spanning arts, sciences, commerce, social sciences, law, pharmacy, Islamic studies, and engineering sciences. The university has produced thousands of graduates who now hold senior positions in government, academia, and industry across Pakistan and internationally.

In recent decades, UoK has transitioned from an annual to a semester system aligned with HEC guidelines, adopting the standard 4.0 GPA scale for all programmes. At University of Karachi, the minimum passing grade is D, which corresponds to a percentage range of 45–49% and carries 1.00 grade point. A student scoring below 45% in any course receives an F (Fail) with 0.00 grade points. An F grade must be repeated or cleared through supplementary examinations as permitted by department policy. Courses with an F do not contribute positively to CGPA but are counted in the credit-hour denominator, significantly lowering the cumulative average.

University of Karachi Minimum CGPA Requirements and Probation Rules

Undergraduate Requirements

Undergraduate students at the University of Karachi must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 on the 4.0 scale to remain in good academic standing. A CGPA of at least 2.00 is also required for graduation in all bachelor's programmes, in line with HEC mandatory minimums. Students failing to meet this threshold are placed on academic probation.

Graduate Requirements

For MS and MPhil programmes, UoK requires a minimum CGPA of 2.5 to remain enrolled and graduate. PhD candidates must maintain a CGPA of at least 3.0 throughout their doctoral studies. These thresholds are prescribed by the HEC and are strictly enforced by the university's academic departments.

Probation and Recovery

A student whose CGPA falls below 2.0 at the end of any semester is placed on academic probation. During the probation period, the student must raise their CGPA above 2.0 in the next semester. If CGPA remains below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters, the student faces the risk of suspension or expulsion as per UoK academic regulations. Probationary students may be restricted from registering for more than a limited credit load each semester.

UoK Academic Honours and Dean's List

The University of Karachi recognises academic excellence through a structured honours system. Students who achieve a CGPA of 3.50 or above in any semester are placed on the Dean's List of their respective faculty. A Merit Certificate is awarded to students in the top 10 percentile of their batch at the time of graduation.

The prestigious Gold Medal is awarded at the annual convocation to the student with the highest CGPA in each graduating batch within a programme. Additionally, students maintaining a CGPA of 3.80 or above throughout their degree may be considered for the Chancellor's Award for outstanding academic achievement, one of the university's highest academic distinctions.

Absolute vs Relative Grading at University of Karachi

University of Karachi follows an absolute grading system as mandated by HEC. In this system, fixed percentage ranges map directly to letter grades and their corresponding grade points, regardless of how other students in the class perform. For example, any student scoring 85% or above will receive an A (4.00), irrespective of the class average or bell-curve adjustments.

This is distinct from a relative or norm-referenced grading system, where grades are assigned based on a student's rank within the class distribution. UoK's absolute grading approach ensures transparency and consistency: every student knows in advance what score corresponds to which grade, and there is no grade inflation or deflation based on class performance.

UoK Admission Aggregate and Merit Calculator

Admission to undergraduate programmes at the University of Karachi is based on an aggregate merit score calculated from three components:

Aggregate = Matric Marks × 10% + Intermediate / FSc Marks × 40% + Entry Test Score × 50%

The entry test used varies by faculty — some programmes use NTS-NAT, while others use a UoK-administered subject test. Candidates are ranked solely on this aggregate, and merit lists are published on the official UoK admissions portal. No interview marks are added for most undergraduate programmes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does University of Karachi use semester or annual system?

University of Karachi has transitioned to a semester system for most of its programmes, in compliance with HEC directives. Each academic year is divided into two regular semesters (Fall and Spring), and some programmes also offer a Summer semester. The GPA is calculated per semester and the CGPA accumulates across all completed semesters.

Can I improve my UoK CGPA by repeating a course?

Yes. Students at UoK may repeat a course in which they received a low grade, subject to their department's course-repeat policy. Upon successful repetition, the new grade typically replaces the old one in CGPA calculations, though both attempts may appear on the transcript. Contact your department's academic advisor for specific repeat-course rules.

What GPA do I need for UoK merit scholarship?

UoK merit scholarships generally require a CGPA of 3.0 or above, with competitive need-based aid often requiring 3.5+. Students in the top 10 percentile of their batch may also qualify for faculty-level merit awards. Scholarship criteria are published each year by the university's Financial Assistance office and may vary by faculty.

Does UoK offer a grade of A+ separately or combined with A?

At University of Karachi, following the HEC standard grading scale, A+ and A are combined and both carry the same grade point value of 4.00. Both are awarded for scores of 85% and above. There is no distinction in GPA calculation between an A and an A+; both carry the maximum grade point of 4.00.

How many credit hours are required to graduate from UoK?

Credit hour requirements vary by programme. Most 4-year bachelor's degrees at UoK require between 124 and 136 credit hours. Two-year associate and master's programmes typically require 60–72 credit hours. The exact requirement is specified in each programme's official scheme of studies, available from your department or the UoK academic regulations.
