Absolute vs Relative Grading at University of Karachi
University of Karachi follows an absolute grading system as mandated by HEC. In this system, fixed percentage ranges map directly to letter grades and their corresponding grade points, regardless of how other students in the class perform. For example, any student scoring 85% or above will receive an A (4.00), irrespective of the class average or bell-curve adjustments.
This is distinct from a relative or norm-referenced grading system, where grades are assigned based on a student's rank within the class distribution. UoK's absolute grading approach ensures transparency and consistency: every student knows in advance what score corresponds to which grade, and there is no grade inflation or deflation based on class performance.
