About PIEAS — Pakistan's Fully Funded University
The Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) is a federal public university located in Nilore, approximately 25 kilometres from central Islamabad. It operates under the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and was established in 2000 after decades of operation as PAEC's technical training institute since 1967. PIEAS holds one of the highest HEC university rankings in Pakistan and is consistently recognised as one of the top engineering and science universities in the country.
What makes PIEAS truly unique among all Pakistani universities is its fully funded model: every undergraduate student admitted to PIEAS receives completely free tuition, free on-campus hostel accommodation (residency in the campus hostels is compulsory), and a monthly stipend from PAEC. No other public university in Pakistan offers this combination to all students regardless of their financial background. This reflects PAEC's strategic interest in developing Pakistan's nuclear, engineering, and applied sciences talent.
PIEAS has an extremely small annual intake — approximately 90 to 120 seats per year across all undergraduate programmes. This small cohort combined with world-class laboratories, on-campus residency, and PAEC mentorship creates an unusually intense academic environment. PIEAS graduates are highly sought-after in Pakistan's energy, defence, nuclear, and technology sectors, and many go on to postgraduate study at leading international universities.

PIEAS Minimum CGPA and Academic Requirements
PIEAS undergraduate students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0. Given the fully funded and residential nature of PIEAS, students who fall below the minimum CGPA threshold face a formal academic review and may be asked to leave the institution. Given the highly competitive entry, PIEAS student bodies are typically high performers, and CGPAs below 2.5 are relatively rare. For MS and PhD programmes, the minimum CGPA is 2.5 and 3.0 respectively.
PIEAS Programmes
BE Nuclear Engineering — Pakistan's Only Civilian Nuclear Engineering Degree
PIEAS's BE Nuclear Engineering is the only civilian nuclear engineering degree offered in Pakistan. The programme covers reactor physics, nuclear fuel cycle, radiation safety, nuclear instrumentation, thermal hydraulics, and reactor design. Graduates work with PAEC at Chashma and KANUPP nuclear power plants, in PAEC research reactors, and increasingly in international nuclear agencies and postgraduate study abroad. No other university in Pakistan offers this programme.
BE Electrical Engineering and BE Mechanical Engineering
PIEAS offers PEC-accredited BE Electrical Engineering and BE Mechanical Engineering with a strong emphasis on applied sciences and research. The EE programme covers power systems, electronics, control, and instrumentation — all with a nuclear and advanced technology flavour. The ME programme is strong in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and mechanical design for industrial applications. Both programmes benefit from PAEC's research infrastructure.
BS Physics, BS Chemistry, and BS Computer Science
PIEAS also offers BS Physics, BS Chemistry, and BS Computer Science for students with a strong aptitude in pure sciences and computing. These programmes benefit from PAEC's world-class laboratories, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) equipment, cyclotron, and advanced computational facilities. BS CS graduates from PIEAS have strong mathematics and analytical skills and are highly valued in Pakistan's tech sector.
PIEAS Admission — Pakistan's Most Competitive
Aggregate = Matric Marks × 10% + FSc Marks × 40% + PIEAS Entry Test × 50%
PIEAS conducts its own PIEAS Entry Test, considered one of the hardest university entry tests in Pakistan. Only students with excellent FSc Pre-Engineering results in Physics and Mathematics are competitive. Given only ~90–120 total seats across all programmes and applicants from across Pakistan competing, the aggregate cutoff is among the highest of any university in the country.
Admission to PIEAS also involves a background verification process given the university's PAEC affiliation and its proximity to sensitive nuclear research facilities. All admitted students are required to take up on-campus residence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PIEAS really free for all students?
Yes. PIEAS is unique in Pakistan in that all undergraduate students receive: (1) completely free tuition — zero fee, (2) free on-campus hostel accommodation (residency is compulsory), and (3) a monthly stipend from the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. This applies to all students regardless of financial need. No other HEC-recognised public university in Pakistan offers this combination to 100% of its students.
How hard is it to get into PIEAS?
PIEAS admission is among the most competitive in Pakistan. With only 90–120 seats per year and applicants from across Pakistan competing, the entry test cutoff is very high. The PIEAS Entry Test covers Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry at a level that requires preparation beyond standard FSc. Students with FSc marks in the 80–90%+ range and strong entry test scores are typically required. The acceptance rate is estimated to be well under 5% of applicants.
Is on-campus residency compulsory at PIEAS?
Yes. On-campus residence in PIEAS hostels is compulsory for all students. The residential model is central to the PIEAS academic culture — students live, study, and research together on campus, which fosters intense peer learning and faculty interaction. Since accommodation is also provided free of charge as part of PAEC's scholarship package, there is no financial burden on students.
What careers do PIEAS graduates pursue?
PIEAS graduates enter careers in Pakistan's nuclear energy sector (PAEC's Chashma and KANUPP plants), defence (KRL, NDC), OGDCL, WAPDA, PIA, and major technology companies. Many PIEAS graduates pursue competitive postgraduate study at top international universities in the USA, UK, Germany, South Korea, and China — often on full scholarships due to the strength of their academic record and PIEAS's international reputation in nuclear sciences.
Can PIEAS students get HEC scholarships for MS/PhD?
Yes. PIEAS graduates who meet HEC's CGPA threshold (3.0+ for most schemes, 3.5+ for top-tier overseas scholarships) are eligible and highly competitive for HEC's Indigenous PhD Fellowship and Overseas Scholarship programmes. Given the high average CGPA of PIEAS graduates and the prestige of their degrees, many PIEAS alumni secure HEC overseas scholarships. PAEC itself also offers postgraduate funding for graduates who join PAEC service.
