About Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU)
Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) was established in 1974 as the first open university in Asia and the third in the world. Named after Pakistan's national poet and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal, AIOU is headquartered in Islamabad and has the distinction of being the second largest university in the world by student enrollment, with over 1.3 million registered students enrolled in programmes ranging from matriculation to PhD. AIOU is a federal public university supervised by the HEC and offers fully distance-education programmes through a network of regional campuses, study centres, and tutors spread across all provinces and territories of Pakistan.
AIOU's mission is to provide affordable, accessible higher education to students who cannot attend conventional universities due to work, family, geography, or financial constraints. AIOU Assessment Structure
Total Marks = Assignments / TMAs 30% + Final Examination 70%
AIOU uses a dual assessment model. Each course has Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs) which contribute 30% of the final marks, and a final written examination which contributes 70%. Students must pass both components separately — passing only one is not sufficient to pass the course. The combined weighted score is used to determine the grade and grade points on the HEC 4.0 scale.

AIOU Key Programmes
BEd and MEd — Pakistan's Largest Teacher Education Programmes
AIOU's BEd (Bachelor of Education) and MEd (Master of Education) programmes are the largest teacher education programmes in Pakistan and among the largest in the world. Hundreds of thousands of in-service government school teachers enrol in these programmes each semester. BEd is required for government school teachers to be confirmed/promoted, and MEd qualifies teachers for higher pay grades and head-teacher positions. These programmes are fully distance-based with face-to-face workshops at regional study centres.
BS and BA Programmes
AIOU offers BS (4-year) programmes in Education, Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics, Urdu, English, Islamic Studies, Library Information Science, and Pakistan Studies. The traditional BA (2-year) programme — though being phased out in favour of BS nationally — remains an important qualification route for students who completed Intermediate and want to enter government service. AIOU's distance-mode BS degrees are accepted for CSS, PMS, government jobs, and further higher studies including MPhil and PhD.
MBA and MS Programmes
AIOU offers an MBA programme in several specialisations (Finance, Marketing, HRM, Banking & Finance) and MS programmes in Education, Computer Science, Mathematics, and several other disciplines. The MBA is designed for working professionals who cannot attend a conventional business school, and is delivered through printed study guides, online LMS materials, and workshop sessions. Is AIOU degree valid for government jobs?
Yes. AIOU is a fully HEC-recognised university and its degrees (BEd, MEd, BA, BS, MA, MSc, MBA, MPhil, PhD) are accepted for all government employment, CSS/PMS competitive examinations, and professional registrations. The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) and Provincial Public Service Commissions (PPSC, KPPSC, SPSC, BPSC) accept AIOU degrees. However, for CSS and PMS, the degree must be in the relevant discipline required by the post.
What is the minimum CGPA at AIOU?
