Key Differences from HEC Standard Scale
NUST's grading scale differs from the HEC standard scale in two important ways. First, NUST does not award an A+ grade — the maximum achievable grade is A (4.00 grade points), awarded for scores of 90% and above. Second, NUST's minimum passing score is 50% (grade D), which is higher than the HEC minimum of 45%. A student scoring 45–49% at NUST receives an F and must repeat the course, whereas at many other universities that score would pass.
How to Calculate Your NUST GPA
GPA Formula
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
To calculate your NUST semester GPA: multiply the grade points for each course by its credit hours to obtain Quality Points. Sum all Quality Points and divide by the total credit hours registered in that semester.
Step-by-Step Worked Example — SEECS BE Electrical Engineering Semester 3
| Subject | Credit Hours | Grade | Grade Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|

NUST Minimum CGPA Requirements and Probation Rules
Undergraduate Requirements
NUST undergraduate students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 on the 4.0 scale. A student whose CGPA falls below 2.0 is placed on academic probation. If the CGPA remains below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters, the student may be dismissed from the programme. Students are also required to pass all mandatory courses — failure to clear a prerequisite course may prevent registration in subsequent courses.
Postgraduate Requirements
MS and MEng students at NUST must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.5 throughout their programme. PhD candidates must achieve and sustain a minimum CGPA of 3.0. Thesis-based MS programmes additionally require successful completion of a research thesis supervised by a NUST faculty member.
Credit Load Restrictions
NUST students typically carry 15–21 credit hours per semester. Students on academic probation may be restricted to a lighter load to allow grade recovery. The maximum permitted load is generally 21 credit hours, though individual schools may set lower caps for specific programmes or semesters.
NUST Academic Honours and VC Appreciation Certificate
NUST recognises outstanding academic performance through its Vice Chancellor's Appreciation Certificate, awarded to students who achieve a semester GPA of 3.70 or above (equivalent to A- average). Students who achieve the highest CGPA in their graduating batch receive the prestigious NUST Gold Medal at the annual convocation.
Additionally, NUST offers merit-based fee concessions to students maintaining high CGPAs. Students in the top 10 percentile of their school's graduating batch may also be considered for special merit awards by their school's dean. The VC Appreciation Certificate requirement applies per semester, so a student can qualify in one semester but not another depending on their performance.

NUST Admission Aggregate and Merit Calculator
Undergraduate admission to NUST is based on a merit aggregate calculated from three components:
Aggregate = Matric Marks × 10% + Intermediate / FSc Marks × 40% + NET Score × 50%
NUST conducts its own entry test called the NUST Entrance Test (NET), which is held multiple times per year. The NET tests mathematics, physics, English, and intelligence for engineering programmes. NBS applicants take a separate NET for management sciences. Candidates are ranked purely on aggregate merit, and programmes with higher demand (such as SEECS Computer Science) have higher cut-off aggregates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does NUST have an A+ grade?
No. NUST does not award an A+ grade. The maximum grade at NUST is A (4.00 grade points), awarded for scores of 90% and above. This differs from the standard HEC scale where some universities combine A+ and A at 4.00, or award A+ separately. At NUST, all scores of 90% and above receive A (4.00), with no distinction between A and A+.
What is the minimum passing percentage at NUST?
The minimum passing score at NUST is 50%, which corresponds to the grade D (1.00 grade points). A student scoring between 50–54% receives a D and passes the course. Any score below 50% receives an F (0.00) and requires a course repeat. This is stricter than the HEC standard minimum of 45% used at many other Pakistani universities.
Can I repeat a course at NUST to improve my CGPA?
Yes. NUST allows students to repeat failed courses and, in some cases, courses where a low grade was received. When a course is repeated, the new grade replaces the old grade in CGPA calculations. However, both grades may appear on the transcript. There are limits on how many courses can be repeated. Students on probation may be required to repeat specific courses first. Check with your school's academic office for specific repeat-course policies.
How many semesters does a NUST BE/BS degree take?
Most NUST undergraduate degrees (BE and BS programmes) are 4-year programmes spanning 8 regular semesters. Students typically take 15–21 credit hours per semester, totalling approximately 130–145 credit hours for the full degree. Final year projects in SEECS and SMME carry 6–9 credit hours and are completed over one or two semesters.
What CGPA is needed for NUST Dean's List or merit scholarship?
NUST awards the Vice Chancellor's Appreciation Certificate (equivalent to Dean's List) to students achieving a semester GPA of 3.70 or above. Merit-based fee concessions (scholarships) at NUST typically require a CGPA of 3.5 or above in the most recent semester. The Gold Medal is awarded to the student with the highest CGPA in each graduating batch within a school.
