GPA Calculator FAQs
Semester GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours). Multiply each subject's grade points by its credit hours (called quality points), sum them all, then divide by total credit hours. For example: three 3-credit courses graded A (4.0), B+ (3.3), and B (3.0) give GPA = (12 + 9.9 + 9.0) ÷ 9 = 3.43. Our calculator does this automatically the moment you enter grades.
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) standard grading scale uses a 4.0 system: A (4.0, 85–100%), A- (3.7, 80–84%), B+ (3.3, 75–79%), B (3.0, 70–74%), B- (2.7, 65–69%), C+ (2.3, 60–64%), C (2.0, 55–59%), C- (1.7, 50–54%), D (1.0, 45–49%), F (0.0, below 45%). Individual universities like NUST, LUMS, and IBA apply their own variations within this framework.
A GPA of 3.50–4.00 (Distinction) is excellent — you'll qualify for top scholarships and competitive graduate programs. 3.00–3.49 (First Division) is very competitive and highly regarded by employers. 2.00–2.99 (Second Division) satisfies graduation requirements but may limit some opportunities. Below 2.0 is academic probation territory — most universities require a minimum 2.0 CGPA to continue enrollment.
Yes. NUST applies slightly higher percentage thresholds than the HEC standard: A (4.0) requires 90%+ (vs 85%+ standard), B+ (3.3) requires 80–84%, and their failing grade (F) kicks in at below 50%. This means getting an A at NUST is harder than at many other Pakistani universities. Our calculator includes NUST's specific scale — just select NUST from the university dropdown.
LUMS uses one of Pakistan's most granular grading scales: A (4.0, 93%+), A- (3.67, 90–92%), B+ (3.33, 87–89%), B (3.0, 83–86%), B- (2.67, 80–82%), C+ (2.33, 77–79%), C (2.0, 73–76%), C- (1.67, 70–72%), D+ (1.33, 67–69%), D (1.0, 63–66%), D- (0.67, 60–62%), F (0.0, below 60%). LUMS also uses a stricter F threshold — you fail at below 60% instead of the 45% standard.
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester only — it measures your performance that term. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the weighted average of all your semester GPAs throughout your degree. Your official degree certificate shows your CGPA, not individual semester GPAs. SGPA is simply another term for semester GPA, used by some universities including those following Indian UGC guidelines.
A typical semester in Pakistani universities carries 15–21 credit hours. Most institutions recommend 15–18 credit hours per semester for regular progress. Individual courses are typically 2–4 credit hours; lab-based courses often carry 1 additional credit. Final year projects can be 3–6 credit hours and thesis work up to 9 credit hours.
Yes. Our calculator fully supports COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) with its official grading scale. COMSATS follows the HEC standard 4.0 scale: A (4.0, 85%+), A- (3.7, 80–84%), B+ (3.3, 75–79%), and so on down to F (0.0, below 45%). Just select COMSATS from the university dropdown to load the correct grading scale automatically.
HEC scholarship requirements vary by program: the Indigenous 5000 Fellowships require a minimum 2.5 CGPA. The Overseas PhD Scholarship generally requires First Division (3.0+ or 75% equivalent). HEC Need-Based Scholarships don't have a strict CGPA cutoff but prefer 2.5+. Competitive programs like Fulbright (supported by HEC) typically expect 3.0–3.5 minimum.
Use the HEC-approved formula: Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. Common conversions: 4.0 = 100%, 3.7 = 92.5%, 3.5 = 87.5%, 3.0 = 75%, 2.7 = 67.5%, 2.5 = 62.5%, 2.0 = 50%. Use our dedicated CGPA to Percentage converter for instant bidirectional conversion.
FAST-NUCES (National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences) uses a 4.0 scale aligned with the HEC standard: A (4.0), A- (3.7), B+ (3.3), B (3.0), B- (2.7), C+ (2.3), C (2.0), C- (1.7), D (1.0), F (0.0). The minimum CGPA to graduate from FAST-NUCES across all campuses (Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Chiniot) is 2.0. Select FAST-NUCES in our calculator to auto-load this scale.
As per HEC guidelines, students with a cumulative CGPA below 2.0 are placed on academic probation. Students on probation may be restricted from registering for certain courses, may lose scholarship eligibility, and face mandatory academic counselling. Continued CGPA below 2.0 across multiple semesters may lead to academic dismissal. Some universities also monitor semester GPA separately — NUST, for example, requires a minimum semester GPA of 2.0 in addition to the cumulative threshold.
