Frequently Asked Questions
What is the oldest engineering university in Pakistan?
UET Lahore, established in 1921 as Maclagan Engineering College, is Pakistan's oldest engineering institution. It was renamed the West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology in 1961 upon gaining university status, and later became the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore. Its more than 100-year history makes it the most historically significant engineering institution in the country.
What is the minimum CGPA to graduate from UET Lahore?
A minimum CGPA of 2.0 on the 4.0 scale is required to graduate from UET Lahore. This is both a UET and HEC requirement. Additionally, PEC registration for practising engineers in Pakistan requires the UET degree, which itself requires the CGPA minimum. Students must also complete all mandatory lab courses, industrial training, and the Final Year Project (FYP).
How many semesters is a UET Lahore BE degree?
UET Lahore BE (Bachelor of Engineering) programmes span 4 years with 8 semesters. Students typically register for 15–21 credit hours per semester, totalling approximately 130–145 credit hours for the full degree. The Final Year Project (FYP) is usually completed over semesters 7 and 8 and carries significant credit hours.
Is UET Lahore accredited by PEC?
Yes. All engineering programmes at UET Lahore are accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC). PEC accreditation is required for graduates to register as engineers in Pakistan. UET Lahore has maintained continuous PEC accreditation across all its engineering disciplines. Graduates can apply for PEC membership (Graduate Engineer → Associate Engineer → Professional Engineer) based on experience and examination.
Can UET Lahore students repeat courses to improve CGPA?
Yes. UET Lahore students may repeat failed courses, and in some cases low-grade courses, subject to departmental policy. When a course is repeated and a higher grade is achieved, the new grade generally replaces the lower grade in CGPA calculations, though both may appear on the transcript. Students on academic probation may be required to repeat specific courses. Consult the UET academic regulations or your department's academic advisor for exact repeat-course rules.
