CGPA Calculator FAQs
CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours. Each semester's GPA is multiplied by that semester's credit hours (giving quality points), all quality points are summed, then divided by total credit hours earned so far. Example: if Semester 1 gave GPA 3.5 over 18 credits and Semester 2 gave GPA 3.2 over 18 credits, CGPA = (63 + 57.6) ÷ 36 = 3.35. Our calculator automates this in real time.
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your performance for a single semester only — it resets each term. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the running weighted average across every semester of your degree. Your degree certificate shows your final CGPA. Some Pakistani universities use "GPA" to mean semester GPA and "CGPA" for the cumulative figure.
Expectations vary by sector: Top MNCs and tech firms typically require 3.0+ CGPA; HEC Indigenous Fellowships require 2.5 minimum; competitive roles at P&G, Unilever, Shell prefer 3.3–3.5; CSS/PMS requires First Division equivalent (3.0 / 75%+); Fulbright strongly prefers 3.0–3.5. For MS/PhD at NUST, LUMS, or COMSATS, aim for 3.0 minimum and 3.5+ for funded positions.
Yes, but the math becomes harder each semester as your total credit hours accumulate. The credit weight of each new semester shrinks relative to your cumulative total. To raise a 2.8 CGPA to 3.0 in two remaining 18-credit semesters, you'd need approximately a 3.8 GPA in both — very achievable but requires deliberate effort. Use this CGPA calculator to model exactly what improvement is possible based on your remaining semesters.
Your final CGPA appears on your official degree certificate. Your academic transcript (issued separately) typically shows SGPA per semester and your running CGPA. Your division class (Distinction, First Division, etc.) is determined by your final CGPA. Some universities additionally convert the CGPA to a percentage and print both on the transcript.
A final CGPA of 3.50 or above (on a 4.0 scale) classifies as Distinction at most Pakistani universities, equivalent to 87.5% or higher. Some universities set the Distinction threshold at 3.60 or 3.70. The Vice Chancellor's or Dean's Gold Medal is typically awarded to the student with the highest CGPA in each graduating class. Always check your specific university's academic regulations for the exact Distinction cutoff.
NUST requires a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. Students whose CGPA falls below 2.0 are placed on academic probation and may face course registration restrictions. Additionally, NUST monitors semester GPA independently — a single semester with GPA below 2.0 may trigger a warning even if cumulative standing is acceptable. The minimum CGPA to graduate from NUST is 2.0.
Credit hours are the "weight" in CGPA's weighted average. A semester with 21 credit hours contributes 40% more to your CGPA than a semester with 15 credit hours, even if GPAs are equal. This means: performing exceptionally well in heavy semesters (final year with project/thesis) dramatically impacts your CGPA, while a poor grade in a 1-credit lab barely moves the needle.
Yes. Our main CGPA calculator on the home page supports multiple grading scales including 4.0, 4.3, 5.0, 7.0, and 10.0. For Pakistani universities using the 10-point scale, select the 10.0 option. IBA Karachi, for example, uses a 4.0 scale like most HEC universities — if your university uses 10.0 (common in India under UGC guidelines), the conversion to percentage is typically CGPA × 9.5 (UGC formula) or CGPA × 10.
Yes. Our calculator is fully compatible with LUMS (Lahore University of Management Sciences). LUMS uses a 4.0 grading scale. When entering your semesters, make sure to use LUMS's actual semester GPAs — since LUMS uses a more stringent grading scale (F kicks in below 60%), your GPA at LUMS may be lower than at other universities even with comparable exam scores. The CGPA calculation formula itself is identical across all HEC universities.
The HEC-approved formula is: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. Common conversions: 4.0 = 100%, 3.7 = 92.5%, 3.5 = 87.5%, 3.3 = 82.5%, 3.0 = 75%, 2.7 = 67.5%, 2.5 = 62.5%, 2.0 = 50%. Use our CGPA to Percentage converter for instant bidirectional conversion with full reference tables.
Yes. COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) follows the HEC CGPA framework. The formula is identical: CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours. Minimum CGPA to graduate from COMSATS is 2.0 for undergraduate and 2.5 for MS programs. COMSATS uses a 4.0 grading scale aligned with HEC standards, so this calculator works seamlessly for all COMSATS campuses including Islamabad, Lahore, Sahiwal, Wah, Abbottabad, and Attock.
