NED University of Engineering and Technology Minimum CGPA Requirements and Probation Rules
Undergraduate Requirements
NED University undergraduate students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing and to be eligible for graduation. This applies to all BE programmes including Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer & IS, Chemical, and all other engineering disciplines. Students must also successfully pass every individual course and complete any required project/thesis component before their degree is conferred.
Graduate Requirements
ME programme students at NED must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.5 for enrolment continuation and graduation. PhD students are required to maintain a CGPA of at least 3.0, as mandated by HEC. These postgraduate requirements are administered by the NED Board of Advanced Studies and Research.
Probation and Recovery
Any NED student whose CGPA falls below 2.0 at the conclusion of a semester is placed on academic probation. Probation status requires the student to improve their CGPA above 2.0 in the immediately following semester. Failure to do so for two consecutive semesters places the student at risk of suspension or rustication as per NED University's academic regulations. Probationary students may face a reduced credit-load restriction.
NED Academic Honours and Dean's List
NED University has a rich tradition of academic honours. The Dean's Honour Roll is awarded each semester to students who achieve a GPA of 3.50 or above. This distinction is recorded on the student's official transcript and is widely recognised by employers and graduate schools.
The NED Gold Medal is the highest honour awarded at convocation to the student with the highest cumulative CGPA in the graduating batch of each BE programme. The Chancellor's Medal is awarded to the student with the highest overall CGPA among all graduating batches in the convocation year. The Rector's Award for Academic Excellence is also presented to outstanding students who demonstrate sustained high performance throughout their degree.

Absolute vs Relative Grading at NED University
NED University of Engineering and Technology uses an absolute grading system, as required under HEC regulations for all Pakistani universities. In absolute grading, a student's letter grade and grade points are determined entirely by their individual percentage score against pre-defined fixed thresholds. A student scoring 85% or above receives A (4.00), regardless of how the rest of the class performed.
This differs fundamentally from relative grading, where grades are assigned based on class rankings or statistical distributions such as bell curves. NED's absolute system ensures full transparency: from the first lecture, every student knows precisely what percentage range maps to which grade. This approach also makes CGPA directly comparable across different cohorts and years, which is important for employers and postgraduate admissions reviewers.

NED Admission Aggregate and Merit Calculator
Admission to NED University's highly competitive BE programmes is determined by an aggregate merit score calculated from three components:
Aggregate = SSC (Matric) Marks × 10% + FSc Pre-Engineering Marks × 30% + NTS/ECAT Score × 60%
The NTS-NAT or ECAT (Engineering College Admission Test) score carries the greatest weight at 60%, making it the most important factor in NED admissions. Merit lists are published on the NED admissions portal after each entry-test cycle. Separate merit lists are prepared for Karachi domicile, Sindh domicile (outstation), and self-finance/overseas categories. Candidates are strongly advised to aim for the highest possible ECAT score to compete for programmes like Computer & IS Engineering and Electrical Engineering, which typically have the highest merit cutoffs.
