About NED University of Engineering and Technology

NED University of Engineering and Technology (NEDUET) is one of Pakistan's oldest and most prestigious engineering institutions, established in 1921 — making it over a century old. Located on University Road in Karachi, Sindh, the university was named after Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw, a Parsi philanthropist whose generous endowment made the establishment of the institution possible. Today, NED is a fully autonomous public engineering university with a student population exceeding 10,000.

NED University offers a wide range of programmes including BE (4-year), ME (2-year), and PhD in engineering, architecture, urban planning, and related fields. Its graduates have led major infrastructure projects across Pakistan and have held senior roles in multinational corporations, the armed forces, and government agencies. The university is affiliated with and recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and is an autonomous body under the Government of Sindh.

NED University has consistently maintained its reputation as a centre of engineering excellence. It operates on a semester system following the HEC-prescribed 4.0 GPA scale for all academic programmes, and provides students access to modern laboratories, research centres, and an active NEDUET student portal for academic record management.

Pass Mark and Failing Grade

At NED University, the minimum passing grade is D, awarded for scores of 45–49%, carrying 1.00 grade point. Any score below 45% results in an F grade with 0.00 grade points. A failed course counts in the total credit-hours denominator when computing CGPA, significantly reducing the cumulative average. Students must clear all failed courses — either by repeating them in subsequent semesters or through supplementary assessments where permitted — before graduation from NED University.

How to Calculate Your NED GPA

GPA Formula

GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours

To calculate your NED semester GPA: for each course, multiply the grade points received by that course's credit hours to obtain Quality Points. Sum all Quality Points for the semester. Divide the total by the total credit hours taken in that semester to get your GPA.

NED University of Engineering and Technology Minimum CGPA Requirements and Probation Rules

Undergraduate Requirements

NED University undergraduate students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing and to be eligible for graduation. This applies to all BE programmes including Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer & IS, Chemical, and all other engineering disciplines. Students must also successfully pass every individual course and complete any required project/thesis component before their degree is conferred.

Graduate Requirements

ME programme students at NED must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.5 for enrolment continuation and graduation. PhD students are required to maintain a CGPA of at least 3.0, as mandated by HEC. These postgraduate requirements are administered by the NED Board of Advanced Studies and Research.

Probation and Recovery

Any NED student whose CGPA falls below 2.0 at the conclusion of a semester is placed on academic probation. Probation status requires the student to improve their CGPA above 2.0 in the immediately following semester. Failure to do so for two consecutive semesters places the student at risk of suspension or rustication as per NED University's academic regulations. Probationary students may face a reduced credit-load restriction.

NED Academic Honours and Dean's List

NED University has a rich tradition of academic honours. The Dean's Honour Roll is awarded each semester to students who achieve a GPA of 3.50 or above. This distinction is recorded on the student's official transcript and is widely recognised by employers and graduate schools.

The NED Gold Medal is the highest honour awarded at convocation to the student with the highest cumulative CGPA in the graduating batch of each BE programme. The Chancellor's Medal is awarded to the student with the highest overall CGPA among all graduating batches in the convocation year. The Rector's Award for Academic Excellence is also presented to outstanding students who demonstrate sustained high performance throughout their degree.

Absolute vs Relative Grading at NED University

NED University of Engineering and Technology uses an absolute grading system, as required under HEC regulations for all Pakistani universities. In absolute grading, a student's letter grade and grade points are determined entirely by their individual percentage score against pre-defined fixed thresholds. A student scoring 85% or above receives A (4.00), regardless of how the rest of the class performed.

This differs fundamentally from relative grading, where grades are assigned based on class rankings or statistical distributions such as bell curves. NED's absolute system ensures full transparency: from the first lecture, every student knows precisely what percentage range maps to which grade. This approach also makes CGPA directly comparable across different cohorts and years, which is important for employers and postgraduate admissions reviewers.

How to Check Your NED GPA on the Student Portal

NED University students can access their official GPA and transcript through the NEDUET Student Portal. Follow these steps:

NED Admission Aggregate and Merit Calculator

Admission to NED University's highly competitive BE programmes is determined by an aggregate merit score calculated from three components:

Aggregate = SSC (Matric) Marks × 10% + FSc Pre-Engineering Marks × 30% + NTS/ECAT Score × 60%

The NTS-NAT or ECAT (Engineering College Admission Test) score carries the greatest weight at 60%, making it the most important factor in NED admissions. Merit lists are published on the NED admissions portal after each entry-test cycle. Separate merit lists are prepared for Karachi domicile, Sindh domicile (outstation), and self-finance/overseas categories. Candidates are strongly advised to aim for the highest possible ECAT score to compete for programmes like Computer & IS Engineering and Electrical Engineering, which typically have the highest merit cutoffs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is NED University and when was it established?

NED University of Engineering and Technology was established in 1921, making it over 100 years old and the oldest engineering university in Pakistan. It was founded as a technical school and gradually evolved into a full engineering university. The institution is named after Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw, a Parsi philanthropist whose endowment funded the original establishment of the institution.

Does NED University use letter grades or percentage for official transcripts?

NED University official transcripts display both letter grades and numerical grade points per course, along with the semester GPA and cumulative CGPA, in accordance with HEC formatting guidelines. Percentage scores are not typically shown on the official transcript, though students can view their raw marks through the student portal. When converting CGPA to percentage for job or scholarship applications, the HEC formula (CGPA ÷ 4.0 × 100) is used.

What CGPA is required for NED University gold medal?

The NED Gold Medal is awarded to the student with the highest cumulative CGPA in the graduating batch of each BE programme at the annual convocation. There is no fixed minimum CGPA threshold for the Gold Medal — it is awarded on the basis of being the batch topper. Historically, Gold Medal recipients at NED have typically had CGPAs of 3.80 or above, but the actual cutoff depends on the batch's performance each year.

Can NED students repeat a course to improve CGPA?

Yes. NED University permits students to repeat a course in which they received a D or F grade, subject to the department's course-repeat policy and seat availability. Upon repeating, the new grade is generally used in CGPA calculations in place of the original grade. Both grades may appear on the transcript.
