COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) is Pakistan's largest federal multi-campus university, home to over 60,000 students across 7 campuses. Since Fall 2021, COMSATS replaced its old relative (bell-curve) grading system with a transparent 11-grade absolute grading scale — meaning your letter grade depends entirely on your own percentage, not how others perform. This calculator uses the exact cutoffs from the COMSATS Academic Regulations 2024 so every GPA and CGPA figure you get here is accurate.

How to Calculate Your COMSATS Semester GPA

Your semester GPA at COMSATS is calculated using the credit-weighted average of your grade points. The formula is:

GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours)
1
Look up grade points for each subject from the COMSATS grading scale table above.
2
Multiply each subject's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points.
3
Sum all quality points and divide by the total credit hours that semester.

Worked Example: BSCS Semester 3 at COMSATS (15 Credit Hours)

Subject Credits Grade Grade Points Quality Points
Object Oriented Programming 3 A 4.00 12.00
Data Structures 3 A− 3.67 11.01
Discrete Mathematics 3 B+ 3.33 9.99
Linear Algebra 3 B+ 3.33 9.99
Technical Report Writing 3 B 3.00 9.00
Total 15 51.99
GPA = 51.99 ÷ 15 = 3.47 (out of 4.00)

How to Calculate Your COMSATS CGPA

Cumulative GPA (CGPA) at COMSATS is calculated the same way as semester GPA — but across all semesters combined. You weight each semester's GPA by the number of credit hours taken that semester:

CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Total Credit Hours)

Worked Example: Three-Semester CGPA Calculation (48 Credit Hours)

Semester Credit Hours GPA Quality Points (GPA × Credits)
Semester 1 16 3.61 57.76
Semester 2 16 3.45 55.20
Semester 3 16 3.28 52.48
Total 48 165.44
CGPA = 165.44 ÷ 48 = 3.45 (out of 4.00)

COMSATS CGPA to Percentage Conversion

COMSATS uses the standard HEC formula to convert CGPA to percentage: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.00) × 100. For job applications, HEC scholarships, or foreign university admissions, use the table below as a quick reference:

CGPA Range Equivalent % Division / Classification
3.85 – 4.00 96.25 – 100% Summa Cum Laude / First Division (Distinction)
3.70 – 3.84 92.5 – 96% Magna Cum Laude / First Division (Distinction)
3.50 – 3.69 87.5 – 92.25% Cum Laude / First Division
3.00 – 3.49 75 – 87.25% First Division
2.50 – 2.99 62.5 – 74.75% Second Division
2.00 – 2.49 50 – 62.25% Second Division (Pass)
Below 2.00 Below 50% Academic Probation / Fail

Important Note on CGPA Conversion

The formula above gives an equivalent percentage for reference only. Your official transcript shows your CGPA on the 4.00 scale — not as a percentage. For HEC Indigenous scholarships or government job applications requiring a percentage, use the formula and confirm with your campus registrar if an official conversion letter is needed.

Minimum CGPA Requirements & Academic Probation at COMSATS

COMSATS has strict minimum CGPA thresholds for continuing enrolment. Falling below these triggers academic warning, then probation, and ultimately dismissal if not remedied in time:

🎓
Undergraduate (BS / BEng / BBA)
Minimum CGPA: 2.00. Students with CGPA below 2.00 at the end of any semester are placed on Academic Probation. Two consecutive semesters below 2.00 may result in academic dismissal.
📚
Graduate (MS / MBA / MPhil)
Minimum CGPA: 2.50. MS students must maintain this throughout the programme. Falling below 2.50 triggers a formal warning; the student must raise it within the next semester to continue.
🔬
Doctoral (PhD)
Minimum CGPA: 3.00. PhD students are held to a higher standard. A CGPA below 3.00 in the coursework phase can jeopardise progress to dissertation/thesis, as supervisors and departments review academic standing before approving candidacy.

Grade Improvement & Course Repeat Policy

COMSATS allows students to repeat failed (F-grade) courses; the new grade replaces the old in CGPA calculation. Students may also repeat passed courses once for grade improvement (subject to department approval). The original grade is replaced — but repeated courses are noted on the transcript. Maximum repeats per course: typically 2 attempts including the original sitting.

Dean's List & Latin Honors at COMSATS

COMSATS recognises academic excellence at two levels: per-semester Dean's List and graduation-level Latin Honors. Both are officially recorded on transcripts and are meaningful for graduate admissions and competitive job applications.

Dean's List (Per Semester)

Eligibility Criteria for Dean's List

✓ Semester GPA ≥ 3.50
✓ No F or W (Withdrawal) grade in that semester
✓ Enrolled as a full-time student (minimum 12 credit hours)
✓ No pending disciplinary case

The Dean's List is awarded at the end of each semester. Being on the Dean's List even once is noted on your transcript and is respected by employers and graduate admissions committees. Consistent Dean's List placement (3+ semesters) is a strong differentiator for HEC overseas scholarships and MS/PhD applications.

Latin Honors at Graduation

🥇
Summa Cum Laude
CGPA ≥ 3.85
The highest distinction at COMSATS. Awarded to graduates who maintained outstanding academic performance throughout the degree. Noted in the convocation address and on the degree certificate.
🥈
Magna Cum Laude
CGPA 3.70 – 3.84
Awarded to graduates with excellent academic standing throughout the degree. A CGPA in this range strongly supports applications for MS/PhD programmes and competitive scholarships.
🥉
Cum Laude
CGPA 3.50 – 3.69
Awarded to graduates who maintained strong academic performance. Students in this range also typically qualify for consistent Dean's List recognition across most semesters.

Students must complete all degree requirements with no failing grades to be eligible for Latin Honors. Source: COMSATS Academic Regulations 2024.

Absolute vs Relative Grading: What Changed at COMSATS in Fall 2021?

Before Fall 2021, COMSATS used a relative (normative) grading system. Under that system, the class average determined where grade boundaries fell — a student scoring 75% might receive a B in one semester and a B+ in another, depending entirely on how the rest of the class performed. This created unpredictability and made it difficult for students to plan their academic progress.

Starting from Fall 2021, COMSATS moved to a fully absolute grading system. Fixed percentage cutoffs now determine grades — if you score 80%, you always get A−, period. This change has three major benefits for students:

  • Predictability: You know exactly what score earns what grade — before the exam, not after.
  • Fairness: Your grade is not penalised when your class is particularly strong, nor inflated when it's weak.
  • Transparency: External parties (employers, grad schools, scholarship committees) can interpret your CGPA more reliably when they know it comes from a fixed, published scale.

Important for Students Admitted Before Fall 2021

If you were admitted before Fall 2021 and have grades from both the old relative system and the new absolute system on your transcript, your CGPA reflects a blend of both. The calculation method (weighted average) remains the same — only the grade boundaries changed. Contact your campus registrar if you need a formal explanation letter for postgraduate applications.

How to Check Your CGPA on CU Online

COMSATS students can view their official GPA, CGPA, and semester-wise transcript through the CU Online portal at cuonline.edu.pk. Follow these steps:

Frequently Asked Questions — COMSATS GPA & Grading

Answers based on COMSATS Academic Regulations 2024 and HEC guidelines.

What grading scale does COMSATS University use in 2026? +

Since Fall 2021, COMSATS University Islamabad uses an 11-grade absolute grading system: A (4.00, 85–100%), A− (3.67, 80–84%), B+ (3.33, 75–79%), B (3.00, 70–74%), B− (2.67, 65–69%), C+ (2.33, 61–64%), C (2.00, 58–60%), C− (1.67, 55–57%), D+ (1.33, 50–54%), D (1.00, 45–49%), F (0.00, below 45%). This applies uniformly across all 7 campuses. Note that A− is 3.67 — not 3.70 as many unofficial sources incorrectly state.

What is the COMSATS GPA calculation formula? +

GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours). For each subject, multiply grade points by credit hours (quality points). Sum all quality points and divide by total credit hours. Example: 5 subjects of 3 credits each — A, A−, B+, B+, B → (12.00 + 11.01 + 9.99 + 9.99 + 9.00) ÷ 15 = 51.99 ÷ 15 = 3.47 GPA.

What is the minimum CGPA to avoid academic probation at COMSATS? +

Undergraduate (BS/BEng/BBA) students need a minimum CGPA of 2.00. MS/MBA students need 2.50 and PhD students must maintain 3.00. Falling below these thresholds places you on Academic Probation. Two consecutive semesters on probation at the UG level can result in academic dismissal from COMSATS.

What GPA is needed to get on COMSATS Dean's List? +

You need a semester GPA of 3.50 or above, no F or W (Withdrawal) grade in that semester, and full-time enrolment (at least 12 credit hours). Dean's List is awarded per semester and is recorded on your official transcript. It is one of the strongest signals of academic excellence you can show in MS/PhD applications and competitive job interviews.

What CGPA do I need for Latin Honors (Summa / Magna / Cum Laude) at COMSATS? +

COMSATS awards graduation honors based on final CGPA: Summa Cum Laude ≥ 3.85, Magna Cum Laude 3.70–3.84, Cum Laude 3.50–3.69. You must complete all degree requirements with no failing grades to be eligible. Latin Honors are announced at convocation and printed on the degree certificate.

Is the COMSATS grading scale the same at all campuses? +

Yes. All 7 COMSATS campuses — Islamabad, Lahore, Abbottabad, Wah, Sahiwal, Attock, and Vehari — follow the exact same 11-grade absolute grading scale introduced in Fall 2021. The university issues all degrees centrally, so your CGPA is calculated identically regardless of which campus you attend.

When did COMSATS switch from relative to absolute grading? +

COMSATS transitioned from relative (bell-curve) grading to absolute (fixed-cutoff) grading starting from Fall 2021 (September 2021 intake onward). Under the old system, grades were adjusted based on class performance. Under the new absolute system, your percentage directly maps to a fixed grade — making results predictable and transparent. Students admitted before Fall 2021 may have a mix of both systems on their transcripts.

How do I convert my COMSATS CGPA to a percentage? +

The standard HEC-recommended formula is: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.00) × 100. So a CGPA of 3.50 = 87.5%, and 3.00 = 75%. This is widely accepted for job applications, HEC scholarship forms, and foreign university applications. For formal purposes (government jobs, visa applications), request an official conversion letter from the COMSATS Registrar's office.

Is COMSATS A− grade point 3.67 or 3.70? +

The correct value is 3.67, as per the official COMSATS Academic Regulations 2024. Many unofficial websites, including some student portals, incorrectly show A− as 3.70 (which was used under the old system or is based on a generic HEC suggestion). Similarly, B− is 2.67 (not 2.70) and B+ is 3.33 (not 3.30). Using the wrong values will give you an inaccurate CGPA. This calculator uses the correct 2024 values.

How many credit hours per semester at COMSATS? +

A standard COMSATS semester has 15–18 credit hours. Most undergraduate students take 15–16 credits per semester. Theory courses are typically 3 credit hours; lab components add 1 credit hour. The Final Year Project (FYP) usually spans two semesters for a total of 6 credit hours. A standard 4-year BS programme requires 130–136 credit hours in total.

What is the COMSATS admission aggregate formula? +

The standard COMSATS undergraduate admission aggregate is: 50% Entry Test Score + 50% FSc/ICS Percentage. This applies for most CS, IT, and Engineering programmes. Some programmes may have slightly different weightings. Use the Admission Aggregate tab in the calculator above for instant results. Always verify with the specific campus's admissions office for the current academic year.

How do I check my CGPA on CU Online? +

Log in to cuonline.edu.pk with your COMSATS credentials. Go to Academic Records → Transcript. Your semester-wise GPA, CGPA, and total credit hours are displayed there. You can download an unofficial transcript as PDF. CGPA is typically updated 2–3 weeks after result declaration each semester. For an official stamped transcript, apply to the campus Registrar's office.
