How to Calculate Intermediate Percentage in Pakistan

Your intermediate (HSSC) percentage is based on combined marks from both Part I (1st Year / Class XI) and Part II (2nd Year / Class XII):

Inter Percentage Formula

Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained ÷ Total Maximum Marks) × 100

Example (FSc Pre-Medical, FBISE): Obtained 924 out of 1100 → (924 ÷ 1100) × 100 = 84% → Grade A1

For Federal Board (FBISE): Both Part I and Part II results are combined into a single HSSC result. The total marks are typically 1100 for FSc, ICS, and ICom groups. FA (Arts) groups may have different totals depending on elective subjects chosen.

For provincial boards (Punjab, Sindh, KPK): Total marks are also usually 1100 for science groups, though the individual subject marks and practical exam allocations may differ slightly. Always use the total marks shown on your official BISE result card.

Inter Marks Structure by Program (Federal Board)

Below are the typical subject mark allocations for each intermediate program under Federal Board (FBISE). These are combined Part I + Part II marks. Adjust the calculator to match your board's actual schedule.

FSc Pre-Medical — 1100 Marks Total

Urdu (200) + English (200) + Islamiat (50) + Pakistan Studies (50) + Physics (200) + Chemistry (200) + Biology (200). Physics, Chemistry, and Biology include practical components in both Part I and Part II.

FSc Pre-Engineering — 1100 Marks Total

Urdu (200) + English (200) + Islamiat (50) + Pakistan Studies (50) + Physics (200) + Chemistry (200) + Mathematics (200). Mathematics is theory only; Physics and Chemistry include practicals.

ICS (Computer Science) — approx. 1050 Marks Total

Urdu (200) + English (200) + Islamiat (50) + Pakistan Studies (50) + Physics (200) + Mathematics (200) + Computer Science (150). Computer Science includes practicals. Total varies by elective combination.

ICom (Commerce) — approx. 900 Marks Total

Urdu (200) + English (200) + Islamiat (50) + Pakistan Studies (50) + Principles of Accounting (200) + Principles of Commerce (100) + Principles of Economics (100). Total depends on optional subject choices.

FA (Arts) — approx. 800–900 Marks Total

Urdu (200) + English (200) + Islamiat (50) + Pakistan Studies (50) + three elective subjects (100 marks each). Elective subjects include Urdu Advanced, Civics, Economics, Education, History, Islamic Studies, Sociology, etc.

Inter Percentage Required for University Admission in Pakistan

  • MBBS / BDS (Medical): FSc Pre-Medical 60%+ is the minimum eligibility nationwide. MDCAT 60%+ also required. Top public medical colleges (KEMU, AIMC, CMH, Aga Khan) typically require 85–90%+ in FSc for competitive merit. Private colleges may have lower merit but same 60% eligibility threshold.
  • BE / BSc Engineering: FSc Pre-Engineering 60%+ required for ECAT/ETEA eligibility. UET Lahore merit typically requires 75%+ FSc. NUST (NET) requires a strong inter result alongside their entry test (85th+ percentile). UET Peshawar (ETEA) requires 60%+.
  • BS Computer Science: FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS 50%+ for most public universities. FAST-NUCES, NUST SEECS, COMSATS have their own entry tests. GIKI requires inter + GIKI Test. No fixed board percentage needed beyond 50%–60% in most cases.
  • BBA / BS Business: ICom or FSc 45%–50% minimum for most programs. IBA Karachi and LUMS BSS require 60%+ plus their own aptitude tests. NUST Business School requires NBS entrance test.
  • BA / BS Social Sciences / Arts: FA or relevant inter 45%+ sufficient for most public university programs. For HEC-chartered private universities, 50%+ is standard. Mass Communication and LLB programs may require 50%–60%.

Frequently Asked Questions — Intermediate Grades Pakistan

What is the IBCC grading scale for Intermediate in Pakistan? +

The IBCC grading scale for HSSC (Intermediate) is: A1 (80–100%, Excellent), A (70–79%, Very Good), B (60–69%, Good), C (50–59%, Satisfactory), D (40–49%, Pass), E (33–39%, Conditional Pass), U (Below 33%, Fail). This scale is used by all BISE boards — Federal Board (FBISE), Punjab boards, Karachi board, Hyderabad board, Sukkur board, and all KPK boards. It is the same scale as Matric (SSC).

How is FSc percentage calculated in Pakistan? +

FSc percentage is calculated by adding all your subject marks from both FSc Part I (1st Year) and Part II (2nd Year), then dividing by the total possible marks. Formula: Percentage = (Total Obtained ÷ Total Maximum) × 100. For Federal Board FSc with 1100 total marks, scoring 880 gives (880 ÷ 1100) × 100 = 80% = Grade A1. Use our calculator above by entering your marks subject-by-subject.

What percentage is A1 grade in Inter Pakistan? +

An A1 grade in Intermediate (HSSC) requires 80% or above. For FBISE FSc with 1100 total marks, you need at least 880 marks. A1 is the highest IBCC grade and is typically required for competitive merit lists at top public medical colleges (for MBBS via MDCAT) and engineering universities (for BE via ECAT/ETEA). Many top private universities also give weightage to A1 in inter for admission.

What is the total marks in FSc Pre-Medical and Pre-Engineering? +

For Federal Board (FBISE), both FSc Pre-Medical and FSc Pre-Engineering have a combined total of 1100 marks (Part I + Part II). FSc Pre-Medical covers Urdu, English, Islamiat, Pakistan Studies, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. FSc Pre-Engineering replaces Biology with Mathematics. The total marks are the same (1100) for both groups. For provincial boards (Punjab, Sindh, KPK), the total is also typically 1100 but individual subject allocations may vary slightly.

What percentage is needed in Inter for MBBS admission in Pakistan? +

The minimum FSc Pre-Medical percentage for MBBS eligibility nationwide is 60% (plus 60%+ in MDCAT). However, actual merit at government medical colleges is much higher. Top colleges like King Edward Medical University (KEMU) Lahore, Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC), and CMH Lahore require 85–90%+ in FSc with a strong MDCAT score. Private medical colleges generally have lower merit but the same 60% minimum applies.

What is the passing percentage in Intermediate in Pakistan? +

The passing percentage in Intermediate (HSSC) in Pakistan is 33% overall and 33% in each individual subject. Scoring 33–39% earns an E grade (conditional/supplementary pass — you may need to clear a supplementary exam). Scoring 40%+ earns a D grade (full pass). Note that for university admission eligibility — especially for ECAT, ETEA, MDCAT, and entry tests — most programs require a minimum of 50%–60% in Intermediate, not just the bare 33% pass mark.

How does Inter result affect university CGPA? +

Your Inter (HSSC) result uses the IBCC grading scale (percentage-based). Your university CGPA uses the HEC 4.0 scale — these are completely different systems and cannot be directly compared. However, your inter percentage is used in admission merit calculations at most universities (typically 10–20% weightage alongside entry test scores). Once admitted, your CGPA is calculated freshly from university coursework. Use our CGPA Calculator for your university grades.
