About Air University Islamabad (AU)
Air University Islamabad (AU) is a federal public university established under the auspices of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). It originated as the PAF Institute of Aeronautics in 1997 and was granted degree-awarding status and chartered as Air University in 2002 under the Pakistan Air University Ordinance. Located in Sector E-9, Islamabad, the university is managed by the PAF while following all HEC academic regulations.
Air University is particularly renowned for its Avionics Engineering programme — one of the very few specialised avionics degrees available in Pakistan. Beyond aerospace-related disciplines, AU has grown into a comprehensive technology and management university offering programmes in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Business Administration, and more. The university serves both civilian and PAF-sponsored students.
The campus features modern laboratories for avionics, electronics, software, and computing, alongside a state-of-the-art library, sports facilities, and student accommodation. Air University's graduates are employed in the PAF, aviation industry, technology companies, and multinational firms, and many pursue postgraduate studies in Pakistan and abroad.

Air University Minimum CGPA and Academic Probation
Air University undergraduate students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 on the HEC 4.0 scale. Students whose CGPA falls below 2.0 are placed on academic probation and given a specified period to recover. MS and MPhil students require a minimum CGPA of 2.5, and PhD candidates must maintain at least 3.0 in coursework before advancing to the research and dissertation phase.
Air University Programmes and Departments
BE Avionics Engineering — Pakistan's Premier Avionics Programme
Air University's BE Avionics Engineering is the flagship programme and one of the most specialised engineering degrees in Pakistan. The curriculum covers flight instrumentation, navigation systems, autopilot systems, aircraft communication, radar systems, and embedded systems for aerospace applications. Graduates work with the PAF, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), CAA Pakistan, and international aviation companies. This programme is almost exclusively available at Air University in Pakistan.
BE Electrical Engineering
The BE Electrical Engineering programme covers power systems, electronics, telecommunications, and control systems with an aviation-aware curriculum. Graduates work in WAPDA, PAF technical branches, PEMRA, and telecom and power sector companies. Electives in avionics and aerospace signal processing distinguish AU's EE programme from those of other institutions.
BS Computer Science, BS Software Engineering, and BS Artificial Intelligence
Air University's computing faculty offers BS CS, BS SE, and BS AI. These programmes follow the HEC computing curriculum and produce graduates who compete in Pakistan's IT job market alongside graduates from FAST-NUCES and NUST. The AI programme has grown rapidly with the increasing demand for AI skills in Pakistan's tech sector.
Business Administration
The Department of Management Sciences offers BBA and MBA programmes with a focus on business analytics, finance, and management. The BBA programme is open to students from all academic backgrounds. The MBA is a 1.5–2 year postgraduate programme for working professionals and fresh graduates.
Air University Admission and Entry Test
Aggregate = Matric Marks × 10% + FSc Marks × 40% + AU Entry Test × 50%
Air University conducts its own AU Entry Test for undergraduate admissions. The test covers Mathematics, Physics, English, and (for CS/SE/AI programmes) basic computing aptitude. For engineering programmes, FSc Pre-Engineering is required. For business programmes, FSc students from all groups (Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, ICS) are eligible. PAF-sponsored candidates (children of PAF personnel) receive preference in a reserved quota.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Air University only for PAF personnel and their families?
No. Air University is open to all Pakistani civilian students regardless of PAF background. The university runs open merit seats available to all qualified FSc students. A separate quota is reserved for PAF-sponsored candidates (children of PAF officers and airmen). Civilian students study alongside PAF-sponsored students in the same classes under the same academic regulations.
What makes Air University's Avionics programme unique?
Air University's BE Avionics Engineering is one of Pakistan's most specialised engineering degrees, covering aircraft navigation, flight control systems, airborne radar, communication systems, and embedded avionics — disciplines not taught at most Pakistani universities. The PAF connection gives students access to real aerospace hardware and PAF technical experts as faculty. Graduates are among the most sought-after engineers for Pakistan's aviation and defence sectors.
What is the minimum CGPA to graduate from Air University?
The minimum CGPA to graduate from Air University at the undergraduate level is 2.0 on the standard HEC 4.0 scale. Students on academic probation (CGPA below 2.0) are given a limited time to recover. For MS/MPhil programmes, the minimum is 2.5, and for PhD programmes, a minimum CGPA of 3.0 is required in coursework before advancing to the dissertation phase.
Does Air University have student accommodation?
Yes. Air University has student hostels on its E-9 campus in Islamabad. Accommodation is available for outstation students on a priority basis. The campus also has a cafeteria, sports grounds, a gym, and a library. PAF-sponsored students may have additional housing support through PAF's welfare arrangements.
Can Air University students pursue HEC overseas scholarships?
Yes. Air University graduates who meet HEC's eligibility criteria — typically a CGPA of 3.5 or above for Indigenous PhD scholarships and 3.0+ for other schemes — can apply for HEC-funded postgraduate studies in Pakistan and abroad. Air University's engineering and CS graduates regularly pursue MS and PhD programmes at international universities through HEC and self-funded routes.
