About Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS)
The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), established in 1985, is Pakistan's most prestigious private university and one of the finest institutions of higher education in South Asia. Located in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area of Lahore, Punjab, LUMS operates as a not-for-profit institution supported by the Syed Babar Ali Foundation and Pakistan's leading corporations.
LUMS offers a highly selective undergraduate and postgraduate education modelled on top North American universities. Its unique structure comprises four schools: the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB), the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL), and the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS). Each school maintains its own academic identity while sharing LUMS's liberal arts core curriculum requirement.
Admission to LUMS is among the most competitive in Pakistan, with acceptance rates as low as 3–5% for BBA and BSc programmes. LUMS alumni hold leadership positions in government, global corporations, the judiciary, and academia. The SDSB at LUMS is AACSB-accredited — a distinction held by fewer than 6% of business schools worldwide — making its BBA and MBA graduates competitive globally.

| D- | 0.67 | 40–42% | Marginal Pass |
| F | 0.00 | Below 40% | Fail |
The LUMS D- Grade — A Unique Feature
LUMS is one of very few Pakistani universities to award a D- grade (0.67 grade points) for scores between 40–42%. This grade counts as a pass but carries a very low point value that significantly reduces CGPA. A student scoring below 40% receives an F and must repeat the course. This fine-grained lower end of the scale gives instructors more nuance at the marginal-pass level, distinguishing students who barely pass from those who clearly fail.
How to Calculate Your LUMS GPA
GPA Formula
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to obtain Quality Points. Sum all Quality Points and divide by the total credit hours for the semester. LUMS uses a 3-credit-hour standard for most courses, with some lab and language courses carrying 1–2 credit hours.
Step-by-Step Worked Example — SDSB BBA Semester 2
| Subject | Credit Hours | Grade | Grade Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microeconomics | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Business Statistics | 3 | A- | 3.67 | 11.01 |
| Financial Accounting | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| Business Communication | 3 | B | 3.00 | 9.00 |
| Introduction to Sociology | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Total | 15 | — | — | 54.00 |
GPA = 54.00 ÷ 15 = 3.60 — An excellent semester GPA at LUMS, qualifying for Rector's Honour Roll consideration and merit financial assistance.
How to Calculate Your LUMS CGPA
CGPA Formula
CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Three-Semester Worked Example
| Semester | Semester GPA | Credit Hours | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 3.45 | 15 | 51.75 |
| Semester 2 | 3.60 | 15 | 54.00 |
| Semester 3 | 3.30 | 15 | 49.50 |
| Total | — | 45 | 155.25 |
CGPA = 155.25 ÷ 45 = 3.45 — A CGPA of 3.45 at LUMS represents strong academic standing and qualifies for merit-based financial assistance.
Convert LUMS CGPA to Percentage
HEC Conversion Formula
Percentage = CGPA ÷ 4.0 × 100
LUMS CGPA to Percentage Quick-Reference Table

LUMS Minimum CGPA Requirements and Probation Rules
Undergraduate Requirements
LUMS undergraduate students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. A student whose CGPA falls below 2.0 is placed on academic probation and must raise it above 2.0 within the following two semesters. Failure to improve may result in academic dismissal. Students are also required to meet Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) core requirements in addition to their school-specific degree requirements.
MBA and MS Requirements
MBA and MS students at LUMS must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.5 throughout their programme. Students falling below this threshold are placed on academic probation and risk being asked to withdraw. LUMS Executive MBA (EMBA) participants follow the same grading policy but are evaluated holistically given the professional experience component.
Failed Course Repetition
LUMS students who fail a required course must repeat it in the next available semester. When a failed course is repeated, the new grade replaces the F in CGPA calculations. However, LUMS does not allow grade replacement for courses where the student passed — students cannot repeat a passed course to improve their grade. This is an important distinction from policies at some other Pakistani universities.
LUMS Academic Honours and Rector's Honour Roll
LUMS recognises exceptional academic performance through its Rector's Honour Roll, awarded to undergraduate students achieving a semester GPA of 3.5 or above while carrying a full course load. Each school also maintains a Dean's Honour Roll for students in the top academic tier within that school.
At graduation, Gold Medals are awarded to the student with the highest CGPA in each school. The Chancellor's Gold Medal goes to the student with the highest overall CGPA across all undergraduate schools in the graduating cohort. LUMS also awards the National Outreach Programme (NOP) Merit Scholarship, which is one of Pakistan's most generous need-based academic awards.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum passing grade at LUMS?
The minimum passing grade at LUMS is D- (0.67 grade points), awarded for scores between 40–42%. Any score below 40% receives an F (0.00). LUMS is unique among Pakistani universities in having this D- grade. While a D- is technically a pass, its low point value significantly reduces CGPA when earned in multiple courses.
Does LUMS use relative or absolute grading?
LUMS uses a combination of absolute and relative (curve-based) grading depending on the course and instructor. Some instructors use fixed percentage-to-grade mappings, while others apply a statistical curve based on class performance. The grading methodology is disclosed by instructors at the start of each course. This differs from strictly absolute grading systems used at many other Pakistani universities.
What CGPA is required for the LUMS MBA programme?
LUMS MBA admissions are holistic. A CGPA of 3.0 or above from an undergraduate degree is generally competitive, though exceptional GMAT scores (600+) or significant professional achievement can offset a lower CGPA. LUMS evaluates the complete application including essays, recommendations, and interview performance. Check the SDSB admissions website for the most current criteria.
How many credit hours are required for a LUMS BBA degree?
A LUMS BBA degree from SDSB typically requires 132–138 credit hours over 4 years (8 semesters), including core business courses, LUMS Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) requirements, electives, and a senior capstone project. The exact credit requirement depends on the year of enrolment and any course waivers granted.
Does LUMS issue a percentage or CGPA on the degree certificate?
LUMS degree certificates show the final CGPA on the 4.0 scale, not a percentage. For employers or institutions requesting a percentage equivalent, use the HEC formula: CGPA ÷ 4.0 × 100. The degree also specifies the classification — Distinction (3.50–4.00), First Division (3.00–3.49), or Second Division (2.00–2.99).
