About Pakistan Institute of Fashion & Design
Pakistan Institute of Fashion & Design (PIFD) is Pakistan's only public-sector institution dedicated exclusively to fashion and design education. Established in 1994 in Lahore under a collaboration between the Government of Pakistan and France — with technical assistance from the Institut Français de la Mode — PIFD was created to nurture Pakistan's creative and textile industries by producing internationally competitive design graduates. It is HEC-chartered and holds degree-awarding status across its Bachelor of Design (BDes) and postgraduate programmes.
PIFD occupies a unique position in Pakistani higher education: it is the only institution in the country where students pursue studio-based, portfolio-driven degree programmes at a public university at an affordable fee. Its location in Lahore — the cultural and creative hub of Pakistan — gives students access to the country's textile manufacturing belt, fashion industry, and advertising sector. PIFD graduates work in fashion design, textile design, visual communication, interior design, apparel production, and independent creative practice across Pakistan and internationally.
The institute's curriculum integrates craft, technology, and commercial awareness — blending studio practice with design theory, fashion history, and industry-aligned project briefs. Final-year graduates present a professional portfolio and showcase collection to industry judges as their degree capstone.
PIFD Grading Scale (Official 10-Grade System)
PIFD follows the HEC 4.0 grading scale for all BDes and postgraduate programmes. Studio project grades, design critiques, and written examinations all feed into the same scale. A+ and A are distinct entries — both carry 4.00 grade points, but A+ requires 90–100% and A requires 85–89%.
| Grade | Grade Points | Percentage | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.00 | 90–100% | Outstanding |

How to Calculate Your PIFD GPA
Your semester GPA at PIFD is the credit-weighted average of grade points earned across all subjects — including studio courses, design labs, and theory papers.
GPA Formula: GPA = ∑(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ ∑Credit Hours
Example (BDes Fashion Design Semester 3): Pattern Making Studio (4 cr, A = 4.00) + Textile Science (3 cr, B+ = 3.33) + Fashion Illustration (3 cr, A- = 3.67) + Fashion History (2 cr, B = 3.00) = (16.00 + 9.99 + 11.01 + 6.00) ÷ 12 = 3.58 GPA
How to Calculate Your PIFD CGPA
Your Cumulative GPA (CGPA) is the weighted average of all semester GPAs throughout your BDes programme, with each semester weighted by its total credit hours.
CGPA Formula: CGPA = ∑(Semester GPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Use the CGPA tab above — enter each semester's GPA and credit hours for an instant cumulative result. PIFD's BDes programmes run over 4 years (8 semesters); the Final Year Collection and Portfolio capstone in Year 4 carries significant credit weight and will substantially influence your overall CGPA.
Convert PIFD CGPA to Percentage
Use the HEC standard formula to convert your PIFD CGPA to a percentage for postgraduate applications, government employment, or international study visas.
Formula: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100
| CGPA | Percentage | Class / Division |
|---|---|---|
| 3.80 – 4.00 | 95 – 100% | Distinction |
| 3.50 – 3.79 | 87.5 – 94.75% | First Class |
| 3.00 – 3.49 | 75 – 87.25% | First Class |
| 2.50 – 2.99 | 62.5 – 74.75% | Second Class |
| 2.00 – 2.49 | 50 – 62.25% | Pass Class |
PIFD Minimum CGPA Requirements & Probation
PIFD enforces HEC-mandated minimum CGPA thresholds across all degree programmes. Students who fall below the minimum are placed on academic probation and must consult their studio faculty for an improvement plan.
| Programme Level | Minimum CGPA | Consequence if Below |
|---|---|---|
| BDes (4-year) | 2.00 | Academic Probation |
| MFA / MPhil | 2.50 | Academic Probation |
Because design programmes at PIFD include studio-based assessments judged by panels of faculty and external critics, students are advised to consult their supervisor if they receive below-average critique scores early in a semester — grades in studio subjects can significantly affect the semester GPA.
PIFD Dean’s List & Academic Distinctions
PIFD recognises outstanding academic and creative performance through semester Dean's List awards, merit scholarships, and special recognition for the Best Graduate Collection at the annual graduation showcase.
| Award | CGPA Requirement | Additional Criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Dean’s List (Semester) | 3.50+ | No F or Incomplete; full credit load |
| Director’s Merit Award | 3.80+ | No repeated course; no academic warning |
| Best Graduate Collection Award | Top CGPA in Programme | Outstanding final-year showcase |
| Gold Medal (Convocation) | Highest CGPA in Discipline | First attempt; no course repeats |
PIFD Campus & Programmes
PIFD is located in Lahore and operates a purpose-built campus with specialist design studios, a fashion technology lab, textile printing workshops, computer-aided design (CAD) suites, a design library, and a dedicated runway and showcase space for annual graduate collections. The campus environment is studio-centred — students spend the majority of their academic time in practical workshops rather than conventional lecture rooms.

Absolute vs Relative Grading at PIFD
PIFD uses absolute grading in line with HEC policy. Both studio critique assessments and written examinations are marked against fixed percentage thresholds. A grade is not adjusted based on how other students in the cohort perform.
| System | How Grade is Set | Used at PIFD? |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute Grading (HEC 4.0) | Fixed marks thresholds | ✓ Yes |
| Relative / Bell-curve | Based on class performance | ✗ Not used |
| Pass/Fail Only | Binary outcome | ✗ Not used |

PIFD Admission Aggregate & Merit Calculator
PIFD admission is portfolio-driven and differs significantly from conventional university entry processes. There is no standard FSc Pre-Engineering or Pre-Medical requirement — students from any FSc, FA, or A-Level stream may apply, provided they demonstrate creative aptitude through the PIFD Entry Test.
BDes Admission Aggregate Formula:
Matric: 10% | Intermediate (any stream): 30% | PIFD Entry Test (Portfolio + Creative Aptitude): 60%
Minimum 45% in Intermediate required. FSc, FA, ICS, and A-Level all accepted. Art & Design background preferred but not mandatory.
PIFD Entry Test — What to Expect:
- Portfolio review (sketches, artwork, design samples if available)
- On-site drawing and visual composition test
- Colour theory and pattern awareness assessment
- Personal interview with a faculty panel
MFA / MPhil Admission:
BDes or equivalent (minimum 2.0 CGPA or 45%) + professional portfolio + interview
NTS GAT (Subject) in Design Studies may also be required for MPhil research track.
PIFD intake is limited — seats per discipline are small relative to applicant numbers. Strong portfolio quality carries more weight than academic marks alone. Prospective students without a formal art background are encouraged to build a sketchbook of observational drawings and pattern/colour studies before the entry test.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes PIFD unique among Pakistani universities?
PIFD is the only public-sector institution in Pakistan dedicated entirely to fashion and design education. It was established in 1994 through collaboration between the Government of Pakistan and France, with technical assistance from the Institut Français de la Mode. This makes it the historic anchor of formal design education in Pakistan and the only place to study BDes Fashion Design, Textile Design, or Knitwear Design at a government university.
Do I need an art background to apply to PIFD?
A formal art background is preferred but not mandatory. Students from FSc (Science), FA (Arts), ICS, or A-Level streams are all eligible to apply. What matters most in PIFD admission is your creative aptitude as demonstrated in the entry test — which includes an on-site drawing exercise, colour theory assessment, and portfolio review. Building a sketchbook before the test is strongly recommended.
What grading system does PIFD use?
PIFD uses the HEC 4.0 absolute grading scale for all BDes and postgraduate programmes. Grades range from A+ (4.00 grade points, 90–100%) to F (0.00, below 45%). Studio critique marks and written examination marks are both converted to grades using the same fixed percentage thresholds. The minimum passing CGPA for BDes programmes is 2.00.
Is a PIFD degree internationally recognised?
Yes. PIFD is HEC-chartered and all BDes and postgraduate degrees are eligible for HEC attestation. Many PIFD graduates have pursued MFA and MA programmes at institutions in the UK, Europe, and North America after attestation. The university's historical ties to France and the Institut Français de la Mode also lend recognition in European fashion and design circles.
How do I convert my PIFD CGPA to percentage?
Use the HEC standard formula: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. A CGPA of 3.5 equals 87.5%. Use our CGPA to Percentage converter for an instant result.
