About KIU (Karakoram International University)
Karakoram International University (KIU) is a public federal university established in 2002 in Gilgit, the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). Named after the mighty Karakoram mountain range — home to K2, the world's second-highest peak — KIU was established by the Government of Pakistan to bring quality higher education to one of the country's most geographically remote and historically underserved regions. It is recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and has grown into the premier academic institution in GB.
KIU serves a diverse student body drawn from Gilgit, Hunza-Nagar, Ghanche, Skardu, Diamer, Ghizar, and Astore districts, as well as students from AJK and other parts of Pakistan attracted by its unique location and academic programmes. The university is spread across multiple campuses in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. All KIU programmes are delivered on a semester basis following the HEC 4.0 absolute grading scale.

How to Calculate Your KIU GPA
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Worked Example — BS Environmental Sciences Semester 2
| Subject | Credit Hours | Grade | Grade Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Environmental Chemistry | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Ecology & Biodiversity | 3 | A- | 3.67 | 11.01 |
| Statistics for Scientists | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| GIS and Remote Sensing | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| Pakistan Studies | 2 | A | 4.00 | 8.00 |
| Total | 14 | — | — | 50.99 |
GPA = 50.99 ÷ 14 = 3.64 — An excellent semester performance at KIU, qualifying this student for the Dean's List and well above the minimum CGPA requirement.
How to Calculate Your KIU CGPA
CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Three-Semester Worked Example
| Semester | Semester GPA | Credit Hours | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 3.45 | 15 | 51.75 |
| Semester 2 | 3.64 | 14 | 50.96 |
| Semester 3 | 3.50 | 15 | 52.50 |
| Total | — | 44 | 155.21 |
CGPA = 155.21 ÷ 44 = 3.53 — A strong cumulative result for a KIU student, well above the minimum requirement and competitive for HEC postgraduate scholarships.
Convert KIU CGPA to Percentage
Percentage = CGPA ÷ 4.0 × 100
| CGPA | Percentage Equivalent | Standing |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00 | 100% | Outstanding |
| 3.67 | 91.75% | Excellent |
| 3.50 | 87.5% | Distinction |
| 3.00 | 75% | First Division |
| 2.50 | 62.5% | Second Division |
| 2.00 | 50% | Minimum Pass |

KIU Campus & Programmes
Main Campus — Gilgit
KIU's main campus is located in Gilgit, the administrative capital of Gilgit-Baltistan, situated at the confluence of the Gilgit and Hunza rivers. The campus is surrounded by the spectacular Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and Himalayan mountain ranges. The university also operates sub-campuses in Hunza, Ghizar, Diamer, and other districts to bring education closer to students across GB's vast and rugged terrain.
Key Academic Departments
KIU's academic portfolio spans Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology), Social Sciences (Economics, Sociology, Psychology), Humanities (English, Linguistics, Pakistan Studies), Management Sciences (BBA, MBA), and Information Technology (BS CS, BS IT). The university also offers programmes in Education and Environmental Sciences, reflecting the importance of ecological sustainability in the GB region.
Research & Mountain Studies
KIU has a particular focus on mountain research and glaciology, studying the Karakoram glaciers and their impact on freshwater resources and climate change. The university collaborates with international research institutions on Himalayan and Karakoram ecological studies, making it a globally unique academic institution.
Absolute vs Relative Grading at KIU
KIU follows absolute grading across all its programmes, as mandated by HEC Pakistan. Each grade corresponds to a fixed percentage threshold — a score of 85% or above always earns an A (4.00 grade points), regardless of how the class performs overall. There is no bell-curve adjustment or result normalisation.
Absolute grading ensures that KIU students' GPAs are directly comparable with those from other HEC universities across Pakistan when applying for government jobs, PPSC/FPSC positions, or postgraduate admissions at universities in Islamabad, Lahore, or abroad.

KIU admissions are primarily merit-based, using prior academic results and an entry test. The standard aggregate formula for most programmes is:

|---|---|---|
| Matric / O-Level | 10% | Total marks percentage |
| FSc / Intermediate / A-Level | 40% | Relevant science or arts subjects |
| NTS / KIU Entry Test | 50% | Subject-specific test |
| Total Aggregate | 100% | Separate merit lists per programme |
KIU gives priority to students from Gilgit-Baltistan districts, with reserved seats for each district to ensure regional representation from all parts of GB.
