Quick answer

IST’s own official Merit Determination Criteria confirm four routes. Engineering (FSc/DAE): 20% Matric + 40% FSc Part-1 + 40% Entry Test. Engineering (A-Level): 40% Matric/O-Level + 60% Entry Test. Computing/Science (FSc): 40% Matric + 60% FSc Part-1, no test. Computing/Science (A-Level): 100% Matric/O-Level equivalence alone, no test.

IST does not conduct its own entry test; it accepts NAT, USAT, NET, ECAT, ETEA, MUET, NED’s test or ACT. Change the test total to match whichever test you used.

What Entry Test score do you need?

Set your target merit and we work backwards from your Matric and FSc marks to the Entry Test score you need. The grid shows your merit at every score from 50% to 100% of the paper.

IST Merit Formula 2027: Engineering vs Computing/Science

IST’s own Merit Determination Criteria page publishes four separate formulas, depending on your programme group and your qualification route:

RouteMatricFSc Part-1Entry Test
Engineering, FSc/DAE20%40%40%
Engineering, A-Level40%Not counted60%
Computing/Science, FSc40%60%Not counted
Computing/Science, A-Level100%Not countedNot counted

Engineering covers Aerospace, Electrical, Metallurgy & Materials, Mechanical and Avionics Engineering. Computing/Science covers Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering, Space Science, the Physics minors, the Mathematics programmes, Biotechnology, Chemistry (Nanotechnology), and Remote Sensing & GIS.

For the A-Level routes, IST does not use a separate Intermediate/A-Level percentage. A-Level applicants convert their result to an IBCC O-Level/Matric-equivalent percentage, which is then the “Matric” figure in these formulas.

How to Calculate Your IST Aggregate: Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Convert each result to a percentage. Divide obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100.
  2. Apply your route’s weightage. See the table above for your exact route.
  3. Add the results. The total is your IST aggregate out of 100.

Worked example: Engineering, FSc/DAE route

A student scores 950/1100 in Matric, 490/550 in FSc Part-1, and 280/400 in an accepted entry test.

ComponentMarksPercentageWeightagePoints

Total merit——100%80.91%

Try these same numbers in the calculator above, on the Engineering (FSc/DAE) preset, and you will get 80.91%.

Worked example: Computing/Science, FSc route

IST Entry Test: Which Tests Does IST Accept?

IST does not conduct its own entry test. It accepts results from any of the following, and applicants may use their highest score among tests taken:

  • NAT (NAT-1E, NAT-1CS) — conducted monthly by NTS
  • USAT (USAT-E, USAT-CS) — conducted by HEC’s Education Testing Commission
  • NET (Engineering or Computer Science category) — conducted by NUST
  • ECAT — conducted by UET Lahore
  • ETEA — conducted by UET Peshawar
  • MUET Entry Test for Engineering — conducted by MUET Jamshoro
  • The NED Karachi Entry Test for Engineering Programs
  • ACT — conducted by ACT-USA

Each test has its own scale and its own acceptable result-date window, so change the “Entry Test” total in the calculator above to match whichever test you used. This entry test is only required for Engineering programmes — every Computing/Science programme states “No Entry Test is required.”

IST Merit Impact: How Much Is Each Mark Worth?

For Engineering (FSc/DAE route), FSc Part-1 and the entry test carry equal weight, both above Matric. For Computing/Science, FSc Part-1 carries the most weight.

ImprovementEngineering FSc/DAE (20:40:40)Computing/Science FSc (40:60)
+10 marks in FSc Part-1 (out of 550)+0.727 points+1.091 points
+10 marks in the entry test (out of 400)+1.000 pointsn/a
+10 marks in Matric (out of 1100)+0.182 points+0.364 points

For Engineering applicants, the entry test moves your merit fastest per raw mark since it is scored on a compact 400-point scale. For Computing/Science applicants, since there is no test at all, FSc Part-1 is by far the highest-leverage input.

IST Eligibility Criteria 2027 (Minimum Marks & Seats by Programme)

These minimums and seat numbers are confirmed directly from IST’s own General Eligibility page:

Pre-Medical applicants can now apply to every Engineering programme after completing an 8-week condensed Mathematics course. ICS applicants are accepted for every Engineering programme but must take Chemistry as a remedial subject in their first semester. HSSC/A-Level result-awaiting candidates (first annual exam only) may apply provisionally and must submit their final result within 15 days of announcement.

IST Closing Merit: What Aggregate Do You Need?

There is no single number: closing merit depends on the programme and that year’s applicant pool. Aerospace Engineering and Computer Science are typically IST’s most competitive programmes.

Use the previous cycle’s official closing merit for your programme as your target, then use the required-score tool above to see the score you need to reach it.

How to Improve Your IST Merit Score

  • Confirm your route first. Engineering and Computing/Science use completely different formulas, and A-Level applicants use a different formula from FSc applicants within each group.
  • Engineering applicants: take more than one entry test if you can. IST accepts your highest score among NAT, USAT, NET, ECAT, ETEA, MUET, NED and ACT.
  • Computing/Science applicants: focus entirely on your academics. No entry test is required, so Matric and FSc Part-1 are the only numbers that matter.
  • Check your subject requirements early. Several programmes require specific subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) or deficiency courses if you are missing them.
  • Apply broadly. Consider more than one university so a single test day or programme does not decide your whole year.

Common IST Aggregate Calculation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Adding an entry test score to a Computing/Science aggregate. These programmes explicitly require no entry test.
  • Using the FSc/DAE formula for an A-Level applicant, or vice versa. The two routes are genuinely different, especially for Engineering.
  • Assuming IST has its own entry test. It does not; it accepts NAT, USAT, NET, ECAT, ETEA, MUET, NED’s test or ACT.
  • Using the wrong entry test total. Each accepted test has its own scale; match the total in the calculator to the test you actually took.
  • Treating the estimate as final. Only IST’s own merit list is official.

Frequently asked questions

What is the IST merit formula?

It depends on your programme group and qualification route. Engineering, FSc/DAE: 20% Matric + 40% FSc Part-1 + 40% Entry Test. Engineering, A-Level: 40% Matric/O-Level + 60% Entry Test. Computing/Science, FSc: 40% Matric + 60% FSc Part-1, no test. Computing/Science, A-Level: 100% Matric/O-Level equivalence alone.

Does IST require an entry test for Computer Science?

No. IST’s own eligibility page states no entry test is required for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering, or any other Computing/Science programme. Only Engineering programmes require one.

Does IST conduct its own entry test?

No. IST accepts results from NAT (NTS), USAT (HEC), NET (NUST), ECAT (UET Lahore), ETEA (UET Peshawar), MUET (Jamshoro), NED’s own test, or ACT (USA), and applicants may use their highest score among tests taken.

How is the IST aggregate calculated?

Convert your marks to percentages and apply your route’s weightage. For example, Engineering FSc/DAE with Matric 950/1100, FSc Part-1 490/550 and entry test 280/400 gives 80.91%.

What is the IST formula for A-Level Engineering applicants?

40% Matric/O-Level equivalence + 60% Entry Test. There is no separate Intermediate/A-Level component for this route.

What is the IST formula for A-Level Computing/Science applicants?

100% Matric/O-Level equivalence alone. There is no test and no separate Intermediate/A-Level component for this route.

What is the minimum eligibility for IST Engineering programmes?

At least 60% in Matric (Science) and 60% in FSc Pre-Engineering/ICS/DAE or equivalent, plus a qualifying score in an accepted entry test.

Can Pre-Medical students apply to IST Engineering programmes?

Yes. Pre-Medical applicants can now apply to every IST Engineering programme after completing an 8-week condensed Mathematics course from a recognised university.

How many marks is the IST entry test out of?

IST does not publish one fixed total, since it accepts several different tests with different scales. This calculator defaults to 400 (ECAT’s scale) and lets you change it to match your test.

What entry test score do I need to reach a target merit?

For Engineering FSc/DAE, subtract your Matric and FSc Part-1 points from your target and divide by 0.40, then convert to your test’s scale. Use the required-score tool on this page to do it for your own marks and route.

What merit do I need to get into IST?

It depends on the programme and applicant pool that year, so there is no fixed number. Use the previous cycle’s official closing merit for your programme as a target.

Is this the official IST merit?

No. This is an independent estimator built directly from IST’s own published admission pages. Your official merit position is published by IST on its own admissions portal.

Why is my merit different from the one IST published?

Common reasons are using the wrong route (Engineering vs Computing/Science, or FSc vs A-Level), adding a test score where none is required, using the wrong entry test total, or rounding. Confirm the exact figures with IST’s admissions office.
