About IST
Institute of Space Technology (IST) is a public sector university established in 2002 in Islamabad under the umbrella of SUPARCO (Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), Pakistan's national space agency. IST is the country's only dedicated space science and technology university, combining aerospace engineering, remote sensing, satellite communications, and advanced materials science under one roof.
HEC-chartered and fully accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), IST offers engineering and science degrees at BS, MS, and PhD levels. Its graduates are among the most sought-after in Pakistan's defence, space, and technology sectors. The university maintains close links with SUPARCO research centres, enabling hands-on research exposure for students.
IST Grading Scale (Official 10-Grade System)
IST follows the HEC 4.0 grading scale for all programmes. A+ and A are distinct grades — both carry 4.00 grade points, but A+ requires 90–100% and A requires 85–89%. This 10-grade system is used for all BE, BS, MS, and PhD degrees at IST.
| Grade | Grade Points | Percentage | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.00 | 90–100% | Outstanding |
| A | 4.00 | 85–89% | Excellent |
| A- | 3.67 | 80–84% | Very Good |
| B+ | 3.33 | 75–79% | Good |
| B | 3.00 | 70–74% | Above Average |
| B- | 2.67 | 65–69% | Average |
| C+ | 2.33 | 60–64% | Below Average |
| C | 2.00 | 55–59% | Satisfactory |
| C- | 1.67 | 50–54% | Pass |
| D | 1.00 | 45–49% | Minimum Pass |
| F | 0.00 | Below 45% | Fail |
How to Calculate Your IST GPA
Your semester GPA at IST is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, summing all quality points, then dividing by total credit hours for the semester.
GPA Formula: GPA = ∑(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ ∑Credit Hours
Example: Aerospace Structures (3 cr, A- = 3.67) + Fluid Mechanics (3 cr, B+ = 3.33) + Programming (2 cr, A = 4.00) + Lab (1 cr, A+ = 4.00) = (11.01 + 9.99 + 8.00 + 4.00) ÷ 9 = 3.67 GPA
How to Calculate Your IST CGPA
Your Cumulative GPA (CGPA) at IST is the weighted average of all semester GPAs across the programme, with each semester weighted by its credit hours.
CGPA Formula: CGPA = ∑(Semester GPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Use the CGPA tab above — enter each semester's GPA and credit hours to instantly see your running CGPA. IST's BE programmes are 4 years (8 semesters), and your CGPA is the primary metric for honours classification and postgraduate eligibility.
Convert IST CGPA to Percentage
Use the standard HEC formula to convert your IST CGPA to a percentage equivalent for job applications, foreign admissions, and official equivalence certificates.
Formula: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100
| CGPA | Percentage | Class / Division |
|---|---|---|
| 3.80 – 4.00 | 95 – 100% | Distinction |
| 3.50 – 3.79 | 87.5 – 94.75% | First Class |
| 3.00 – 3.49 | 75 – 87.25% | First Class |
| 2.50 – 2.99 | 62.5 – 74.75% | Second Class |
| 2.00 – 2.49 | 50 – 62.25% | Pass Class |
IST Minimum CGPA Requirements & Probation
IST enforces HEC-mandated minimum CGPA thresholds. Students falling below these benchmarks are placed on academic probation and must improve within a specified timeframe.
| Programme | Minimum CGPA | Consequence if Below |
|---|---|---|
| BE (Engineering) | 2.00 | Academic Warning / Probation |
| BS (Science) | 2.00 | Academic Warning / Probation |
| MS / MPhil | 2.50 | Academic Probation |
| PhD | 3.00 | Dismissal Risk |
Students on probation must clear the required CGPA threshold in the subsequent semester. Repeated probation may result in academic dismissal under IST regulations.
IST Dean’s List & Academic Distinctions
IST recognises outstanding academic performance each semester through its Dean's List and awards gold medals at its annual convocation to top-performing graduates.
| Award | CGPA Requirement | Additional Criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Dean’s List (Semester) | 3.50+ | No F or Incomplete; full credit load |
| Director General’s List | 3.80+ | No warning, no course drop |
| Gold Medal (Convocation) | Highest CGPA in Programme | First attempt, no repeated courses |
IST Campus & Programmes
IST is located in Islamabad, with direct access to SUPARCO research facilities. The campus features dedicated aerospace labs, remote sensing labs, a satellite ground station, and advanced materials research centres.
Programmes Offered:
- BE Aerospace Engineering (4 years, PEC accredited)
- BE Avionics Engineering (4 years, PEC accredited)
- BE Electrical Engineering (4 years, PEC accredited)
- BE Materials Science & Engineering (4 years)

IST has a small, selective intake and strong industry linkages with SUPARCO, the Pakistan Air Force, and defence research organisations. Graduate placement rates in the space and defence sector are among the highest in Pakistan.
Absolute vs Relative Grading at IST
IST uses absolute grading across all programmes. Grades are assigned based on fixed percentage thresholds, independent of class averages. This ensures consistent standards across all engineering and science disciplines.
| System | How Grade is Set | Used at IST? |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute Grading (HEC 4.0) | Fixed marks thresholds | ✓ Yes |
| Relative / Bell-curve | Based on class performance | ✗ Not used |
| Pass/Fail Only | Binary outcome | ✗ Not used |
How to Check Your GPA on the IST Portal
IST students access their semester GPA, CGPA, and academic records through the IST online student information system.

IST Admission Aggregate & Merit Calculator
IST admissions are highly competitive. The university conducts its own written entry test and uses the following aggregate formula for BE and BS admissions.
BE / BS Aggregate Formula:
Matric: 10% | FSc Pre-Engineering / Pre-Medical: 40% | IST Entry Test: 50%
Minimum 60% in FSc is required. IST entry test covers Mathematics, Physics, and English. Candidates must also meet PEC subject requirements for engineering programmes.
Merit cutoffs vary by programme and year. Aerospace and Avionics Engineering are the most competitive disciplines. Check the IST official admissions portal for current-year merit lists and entry test schedules.
