About Islamia College University (ICU) Peshawar
Islamia College University (ICU) Peshawar is one of KPK's oldest, most storied educational institutions, founded in 1913 during the British colonial era as Islamia College. It was established to provide higher education to Muslims in the North-West Frontier Province (now KPK), and received its formal degree-awarding university charter in 2008. ICU is recognised by HEC and is a public sector university governed by the Government of KPK.
Islamia College Peshawar has profound historical significance in the Pakistan Movement. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's founder, visited the college and famously called it "a pearl of all universities in the subcontinent." The college was a major centre of political consciousness among the Muslim youth of the Frontier, and many leaders of the independence movement were educated here. Khan Abdul Wali Khan and other prominent political figures of KPK are among its distinguished alumni.
ICU's main campus is located on University Road, Peshawar, one of the most beautiful and historically significant campuses in KPK. The campus features colonial-era architecture including the iconic main hall, extensive green grounds, sports facilities, a central library, and purpose-built science laboratories. ICU is co-educational at the postgraduate level and draws students from across KPK, FATA/merged districts, and AJK.

ICU Peshawar Campus & Programmes
Natural Sciences and Computing
ICU Peshawar offers BS Physics, BS Chemistry, BS Mathematics, BS Statistics, BS Zoology, BS Botany, BS Microbiology, and BS Computer Science. The Physics and Chemistry departments have a long tradition dating to the colonial era. ICU's science graduates regularly secure positions in government research institutes, KPK public service, school and college teaching, and go on to MPhil/PhD programmes at UET Peshawar, QAU Islamabad, and foreign universities. The Computing department is relatively newer but growing quickly as Peshawar's IT sector expands.
Social Sciences and Humanities
ICU's humanities and social sciences cover BS English, BS Urdu, BS Pashto, BS History, BS Political Science, BS Economics, BS Islamic Studies, BS Pakistan Studies, and BS International Relations. The Pashto department is one of ICU's most distinctive offerings — given the Pashto-speaking culture of Peshawar and KPK, this department trains linguists, scholars, and media professionals in the language of 40+ million Pashtuns. The History and Political Science departments have an especially strong tradition, reflecting ICU's century-long role as a centre of political thought in the Frontier.
Management Sciences
ICU offers BBA and BS Commerce programmes within its management sciences faculty. Given Peshawar's growing commercial economy and its role as the gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia, management graduates from ICU enter banking, trade, logistics, and government service. ICU also offers MPhil and PhD programmes in several departments for research-track students.
Absolute vs Relative Grading at ICU Peshawar
ICU Peshawar uses an absolute grading system in line with HEC 4.0 policy. Each student's final course percentage is mapped directly to fixed grade boundaries — 85–100% = A+/A (4.00), 80–84% = A- (3.67), etc. — regardless of how the rest of the class performed. There is no bell-curve adjustment, mark scaling, or normalisation.
Under a relative grading system, grade thresholds would shift based on class score distribution — a student's final grade could change depending on peers' performance. ICU's fixed absolute system gives students predictable, consistent grade targets across all semesters and departments throughout their degree.
