About University of Peshawar (UoP)
The University of Peshawar (UoP) was founded in 1950 — just three years after Pakistan's independence — making it one of the first universities established in Pakistan and the oldest university in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Located in the University Town area of Peshawar, UoP is a comprehensive research university that provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral education across natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, pharmacy, law, Islamic studies, and management disciplines.
University of Peshawar has played a central role in the intellectual and academic life of KPK and the Pashtun belt for over seven decades. Many of KPK's senior civil servants, doctors, scientists, economists, lawyers, and academics are UoP alumni. The university is home to several national-level research institutes including the Area Study Centre for Central Asia, the Pakistan Study Centre, and the Archaeology Department which oversees research on the Gandhara civilization — one of Pakistan's most significant ancient heritage sites, centered in and around Peshawar and Taxila.
The university campus spans over 1,000 acres and includes extensive botanical gardens, a central library, student hostels, sports facilities, and a medical centre. UoP also houses the Dr. Abdur Rauf Qadri Museum with exhibits on the natural and cultural history of KPK and FATA. The university has deep alumni networks in the government, judiciary, academic, and diplomatic spheres of Pakistan.

UoP Minimum CGPA Requirements & Probation
University of Peshawar enforces HEC-mandated minimum CGPA thresholds across all degree programmes:
- Undergraduate (BS 4-year): Minimum CGPA 2.0 required. Students below this at the end of any semester are placed on academic probation.
- MS / MPhil: Minimum CGPA 2.5 must be maintained. Dropping below this after coursework triggers a warning and may require repeating courses.
- PhD: Minimum CGPA 3.0 in coursework component before advancing to research phase.
- Academic Probation: Probationary students have one semester to recover their CGPA. A second consecutive semester below the threshold may result in programme discontinuation per HEC regulations.
- F Grade Repeat: Students may repeat a failed course. The new grade replaces the F in CGPA calculations, but both grades remain on the official transcript as per HEC transcript policy.
UoP Dean’s List & Academic Distinctions
University of Peshawar recognises exceptional academic performance through semester awards and degree-level distinctions at annual convocations:
- Dean's List / Roll of Honour: Students achieving a semester CGPA of 3.50 or above with no F, Incomplete, or Withdrawal on record for that term are recognised on the Dean's List.
- Vice Chancellor's Gold Medal: Awarded at convocation to the top graduate of each faculty achieving the highest CGPA of the batch — typically 3.90+.
- University Merit Scholarship: Students maintaining CGPA 3.5+ are eligible to apply for merit-based financial scholarships from UoP's scholarship fund.
- HEC Scholarships: HEC need-cum-merit and PEEF scholarships require a minimum CGPA of 2.5 (undergrad) or 3.0 (postgrad). The Indigenous PhD Fellowship requires exceptional academic standing.
UoP Campus & Programmes
Faculty of Natural Sciences
The Faculty of Natural Sciences is UoP's largest and most research-active faculty. It encompasses departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Botany, Zoology, Geology, Geography, Biochemistry, and more. BS programmes in these departments are 4-year degrees under the semester system. The Geology department at UoP is particularly well-regarded in KPK for studying the region's mineral wealth, earthquake geology, and CPEC-route terrain assessment.
Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities
UoP's social sciences faculty offers BS and MPhil/MS programmes in Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work, Journalism and Mass Communication, History, Archaeology, Pashto, Urdu, English, Persian, and Islamic Studies. The Archaeology department is particularly significant as Peshawar sits at the heart of the ancient Gandhara civilization, and UoP archaeologists conduct active field research on Buddhist stupas, Gandharan sculptures, and pre-Islamic heritage sites across KPK.
Institute of Management Sciences (IMSciences)
The Institute of Management Sciences (IMSciences) is an autonomous institute affiliated with University of Peshawar and is one of the most prestigious business schools in KPK. IMSciences offers BBA and MBA programmes and has its own separate campus in Hayatabad, Peshawar. Students applying to IMSciences go through a separate competitive entry process, and it has its own independent page on this website.
Faculty of Pharmacy and Law
UoP's Department of Pharmacy offers Pharm-D (Doctor of Pharmacy) — a 5-year professional degree. The Faculty of Law offers LLB (5-year integrated) and LLM programmes. Law graduates from UoP are enrolled in the KPK Bar Council and serve as advocates, judges, and legal professionals across the province. Pharmacy graduates enter the pharmaceutical industry, hospital pharmacy services, and drug regulatory authorities.
Absolute vs Relative Grading at UoP
University of Peshawar uses absolute grading for most undergraduate programmes, meaning grades are based on fixed percentage cut-offs rather than the class distribution.
- Absolute grading: Your score against fixed cut-offs determines your grade — 90%+ = A+, 85–89% = A, 80–84% = A-, etc. Every student who meets a band earns that grade, regardless of classmates' scores.
- Relative grading: Some advanced MPhil/PhD and specialised research courses may use relative (bell-curve) grading where the class distribution sets grade boundaries. Check your course outline at the start of each semester.
- Absolute grading is the default and is more predictable — use it to plan your study targets for specific grades each semester.

UoP Admission Aggregate & Merit Calculator
Aggregate = Matric Marks × 10% + FSc Marks × 40% + UoP Entry Test × 50%
University of Peshawar conducts its own entry tests for most departments. For science departments, students with FSc Pre-Medical (for biological sciences) or FSc Pre-Engineering (for physical sciences and computing) are eligible. For social sciences, arts, economics, and humanities, students from all FSc groups are eligible. Admission to pharmacy requires NUMS or UoP pharmacy-specific eligibility. Admission is primarily based on KPK domicile holders with a proportion of seats for other provinces.
