About Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST)
Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) was established in 2002 as a federal public university with a unique mandate: to provide higher education primarily in Urdu medium and to serve students who received their schooling in Urdu-medium institutions. FUUAST is headquartered at Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi and also has a campus in Islamabad. It is supervised by HEC and offers programmes spanning arts, sciences, computing, commerce, and social sciences.
FUUAST's founding rationale was to address a significant educational inequality in Pakistan: students who studied in Urdu-medium government schools faced severe disadvantages when entering English-medium higher education institutions. FUUAST was created to provide a quality public university option for Urdu-medium students and to promote Urdu as a legitimate medium for higher education and research — consistent with Article 251 of Pakistan's Constitution, which declares Urdu the national language.
While FUUAST remains one of the most accessible and affordable public universities in Karachi — with very low fee structures — it has progressively offered more programmes in English as well, particularly in computing and sciences. The university enrolls tens of thousands of students at its Karachi campus and serves as a critical higher education pathway for Karachi's large working-class and middle-class student population who cannot afford private universities or commute long distances to other public universities.

FUUAST Minimum CGPA Requirements & Probation
Undergraduate Requirements
All FUUAST BS, BA, and BBA students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain enrolled and to qualify for graduation, per HEC regulations. Students falling below this threshold are placed on academic probation and must recover their CGPA within the following semester. During probation, FUUAST may restrict the student's credit load and require academic counselling. Failure to improve within the probationary period may result in dismissal.
Postgraduate Requirements
FUUAST MA, MS, and MBA students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.5. MPhil students must maintain 3.0 in coursework before advancing to the thesis phase, and PhD students must maintain the same 3.0 minimum in their coursework component. These thresholds are set by HEC and apply uniformly across all FUUAST faculties.
FUUAST Dean's List & Academic Distinctions
FUUAST awards Dean's List recognition each semester to students achieving a GPA of 3.5 or above with a full course load and no failing grades. Students completing their degree with a final CGPA of 3.5 or above graduate With Distinction. Programme toppers receive Gold Medals at the annual FUUAST convocation in Karachi and Islamabad.
FUUAST students are also eligible for HEC need-based scholarships and HEC merit scholarships for academically high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds. Given FUUAST's already low fee structure, these scholarships can cover fees almost entirely for eligible students. MPhil and PhD students with strong academic records may apply for HEC Indigenous PhD Fellowships.
FUUAST Campus & Programmes
Faculty of Computing
FUUAST's Department of Computer Science and Department of Information Technology offer BS CS and BS IT programmes at the Karachi campus. These are among FUUAST's most popular programmes as demand for computing education has surged in Karachi. FUUAST computing graduates find employment in Karachi's large IT and software development sector, telecom companies, banking, and government IT departments. The low fee structure makes FUUAST an important public option for computing education in Karachi.
Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences
FUUAST offers BS Physics, BS Mathematics, BS Chemistry, BS Microbiology, and BS Biotechnology under its natural sciences faculty. These programmes are taught in a mix of Urdu and English and follow HEC curriculum guidelines. The mathematics and physics departments also offer MS and MPhil programmes for research-track students. FUUAST's Karachi campus benefits from proximity to the city's pharmaceutical and chemical industries which provide internship and employment opportunities for science graduates.
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
True to its founding mission, FUUAST has a strong Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences including departments of Urdu, English, Mass Communication, Economics, History, Islamic Studies, and Library and Information Science. The Urdu department is one of the largest and most active in Pakistan, offering BS Urdu, MA Urdu, MPhil Urdu, and PhD Urdu programmes. FUUAST Urdu graduates pursue careers in education (teaching Urdu at school and college level), journalism (Urdu newspapers and TV channels), publishing, and civil services. The BS Mass Communication programme covers journalism, electronic media, advertising, and digital media.
Faculty of Management Sciences
FUUAST's Department of Management Sciences offers BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) and MBA programmes. These are Karachi's most affordable public-sector business degree options, making them highly accessible to students from middle and lower-middle income families. BBA and MBA graduates from FUUAST join Karachi's banking, retail, logistics, and trading sectors. The Islamabad campus also offers management sciences programmes for students in the twin cities.
Absolute vs Relative Grading at FUUAST
FUUAST uses the absolute grading system mandated by HEC. Letter grades are assigned based on fixed percentage thresholds set before each examination — not by where a student ranks among their classmates. A student who scores 85% or above earns an A/A+ regardless of overall class performance. This system ensures that a strong cohort does not penalise individual high achievers, and that FUUAST transcripts are directly comparable across departments, campuses, and academic years.
How to Check Your GPA on the FUUAST Portal
FUUAST students can view their grades and academic records through the FUUAST Student Portal:

FUUAST Admission Aggregate & Merit Calculator
Aggregate = Matric % × 10% + FSc / A-Level % × 40% + Entry Test % × 50%
FUUAST admissions for BS programmes use a weighted aggregate of Matric marks, FSc/Intermediate marks, and an entry test. The entry test covers English, mathematics or science (depending on programme), and general aptitude. FUUAST's very low fee structure and Urdu-medium programme availability make it the most accessible federal university option in Karachi, drawing a large pool of applicants from government school backgrounds.
| Component | Weight | Example Score | Weighted Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry Test | 50% | 75/100 | 37.5 |
