About National University of Modern Languages (NUML)
The National University of Modern Languages (NUML) is a federal public university headquartered in Islamabad with its origins as a language training institute established in 1970 under the Ministry of Defence. NUML gained full degree-awarding charter university status in 2000 and is now supervised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). It is Pakistan's premier and most specialised university for foreign language education, offering degree programmes in more foreign languages than any other university in the country.
NUML operates campuses in Islamabad (main campus, H-9), Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Faisalabad, Multan, and several other cities, making it one of the most geographically widespread universities in Pakistan. It offers BS degree programmes in over a dozen foreign languages including Chinese, Arabic, English, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Turkish, and Persian — alongside Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Applied Linguistics.
NUML has become especially prominent in the era of CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor), as Pakistani companies and government agencies working with Chinese partners urgently need Mandarin-speaking professionals. NUML's BS Chinese Language and Literature programme is now one of the most competitive and sought-after undergraduate degrees in Pakistan, with demand far outstripping capacity. NUML also offers IT and business programmes (BS CS, BS IT, BBA, MBA) at its campuses, making it a comprehensive multi-disciplinary university.

NUML Language Programmes
BS Chinese — Pakistan's Most In-Demand CPEC Degree
NUML's BS Chinese Language and Literature has become one of the most competitive undergraduate degrees in Pakistan, driven by the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). CPEC involves massive Chinese investment in Gwadar Port, ML-1 railway, hydropower plants (Thar Coal, Diamer-Bhasha, Karot), and industrial zones (Rashakai, Allama Iqbal) — all requiring Mandarin-speaking Pakistani professionals. NUML Chinese graduates work as translators, liaisons, and executives at Chinese SOEs (CMEC, CSCEC, POWERCHINA, CRC) operating in Pakistan and command premium salaries.
BS Arabic
NUML's BS Arabic Language and Literature is one of Pakistan's most established Arabic programmes, producing graduates for Islamic scholarship, diplomatic service (Pakistan's embassies in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Egypt), translation, and the Gulf job market. Arabic-speaking NUML graduates are widely employed in Gulf countries' logistics, hospitality, petroleum, and Islamic finance sectors. The programme covers Modern Standard Arabic, Classical Arabic (for Quranic and Hadith sciences), and spoken Gulf dialect Arabic.
BS Korean, Japanese, Turkish, and Russian
NUML is one of the very few universities in Pakistan offering BS degrees in Korean, Japanese, Turkish, and Russian. Korean and Japanese programmes are in high demand due to scholarship opportunities (Korea's GKS, Japan's MEXT scholarships) and tech-industry employment at Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Toyota, and Honda plants in Pakistan and abroad. Turkish programmes have grown due to Turkey's strong cultural and economic ties with Pakistan (Turkish Scholarships, TDiA). Russian programmes serve Pakistan's growing energy and defence cooperation with Russia, and open doors to Russian government scholarships (ROSOTRUDNICHESTVO).
BS English, French, German, and Spanish
NUML's Western language programmes — BS English, BS French, BS German, and BS Spanish — produce graduates for Pakistan's education sector, foreign embassies, international organizations (UN, IOM, UNHCR), and European emigration pathways. German language graduates from NUML are increasingly in demand as Germany's shortage of skilled workers creates immigration pathways (Skilled Immigration Act / Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz) for Pakistani professionals who speak German. DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarships for MS/PhD are open to NUML German-language graduates.
BS Computer Science, IT, and BBA
In addition to languages, NUML offers BS Computer Science, BS Information Technology, BBA, and MBA programmes at its Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi campuses. These programmes follow the standard HEC computing and management curricula and are designed for students who want a NUML degree in technical and business fields. NUML's unique advantage is that IT and BBA students can simultaneously study a second foreign language (e.g., Chinese or Korean) as a minor, giving them a strong career differentiator in Pakistan's job market.
NUML Admission
Aggregate = Matric Marks × 10% + Intermediate / A-Level Marks × 40% + NUML Entry Test × 50%
NUML conducts its own entry test for undergraduate admissions. The test covers English language, analytical skills, and for some programmes, subject-specific content. All groups of FSc (Pre-Medical, Pre-Engineering, General Science, Arts, Commerce) are eligible for language programmes. For BS CS/IT, FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS is preferred. NUML language programmes are open to students from all provinces and no background in the target language is required — the programme is designed to teach you the language from scratch. Admissions are announced annually and the BS Chinese programme typically has the most competitive merit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is NUML's Chinese programme so competitive?
NUML's BS Chinese programme is so competitive because it directly feeds into CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor) employment. Hundreds of Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) operate in Pakistan in energy, construction, telecom, and logistics — and they need Pakistani employees who speak Mandarin. NUML Chinese graduates command salaries of PKR 150,000–500,000+ per month as CPEC liaisons, translators, and project coordinators. The programme has limited seats but extremely high demand, making it one of the hardest BS programmes to get into at any Pakistani university.
What is the minimum CGPA at NUML?
The minimum CGPA to remain enrolled and graduate from NUML at the BS/BBA level is 2.0 on the standard HEC 4.0 scale. MS, MPhil, and MBA students require a minimum CGPA of 2.5. PhD students must maintain a minimum coursework CGPA of 3.0. NUML's Dean's List recognises students with a semester GPA of 3.5 or above. Merit scholarships typically require maintaining a CGPA of 3.0+ throughout the degree.
Does NUML offer Korean and Japanese scholarships?
Yes. NUML has Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Korean and Japanese embassies and cultural institutions. Korean language graduates from NUML are eligible to apply for the GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) for MS/PhD study in South Korea. Japanese language graduates can apply for the MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship for study in Japan. NUML also has MoUs with Chinese universities, enabling its Chinese graduates to apply for CSC (Chinese Government Scholarship) programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate study in China.
Can NUML students study two languages simultaneously?
Yes. NUML students enrolled in a primary language programme (e.g., BS English) can take additional language courses in a second language (e.g., Chinese, French, Korean) as electives or a minor. This dual-language skill is a significant career advantage. NUML's evening programmes also allow working professionals or students from other universities to study a foreign language part-time at NUML campuses. The ability to speak two foreign languages (or English plus a regional language like Arabic, Chinese, or Turkish) is the most distinctive career asset a NUML graduate possesses.
