About BUMHS — Bolan University of Medical and Health Sciences Quetta

Bolan University of Medical and Health Sciences (BUMHS) is a public sector medical university in Quetta, Balochistan. It evolved from Bolan Medical College, which was established in 1972 as one of the earliest medical institutions in the province. Over decades of service to healthcare education in Balochistan, the institution was elevated to university status, becoming BUMHS. It is recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), and is affiliated with several constituent medical and dental colleges across Balochistan.

BUMHS is the primary medical education authority in Balochistan. Its key programmes include MBBS (5 years + 1 year compulsory house job), BDS (4 years + 1 year house job), BS Nursing, BS Allied Health Sciences, BS Medical Laboratory Technology, BS Physical Therapy (DPT), BS Pharmacy, and BS Paramedics. At the postgraduate level, BUMHS offers MPhil in basic medical sciences, MD, and training affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) for specialist training in Quetta teaching hospitals.

Note on grading: MBBS and BDS programmes at BUMHS are assessed using PMDC-mandated professional examination results (percentage-based) rather than the HEC 4.0 credit-hour GPA system. However, allied health sciences BS programmes (Nursing, MLT, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy) use the HEC 4.0 grading scale. This calculator is designed for allied health BS programmes. MBBS students can use it to track percentage-converted grades for academic self-assessment.

MBBS Professional Exam Note

MBBS students at BUMHS sit for annual professional examinations supervised by BUMHS and the provincial health authorities. These are percentage-based (pass mark varies by subject, typically 50% theory and 50% viva/practical). MBBS transcripts do not use the GPA/CGPA system. For HEC scholarship applications requiring CGPA, MBBS students at universities with integrated CGPA systems should consult the BUMHS Registrar for official equivalency documentation.

BUMHS Minimum CGPA Requirements & Probation

Allied Health BS Programmes

Students enrolled in BUMHS BS Nursing, BS Allied Health Sciences, BS Medical Lab Technology, BS Physical Therapy, and BS Pharmacy must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 for continued enrolment and graduation, in line with HEC standards for undergraduate programmes.

MBBS / BDS Professional Requirements

MBBS and BDS students must pass each professional examination in all subjects (written and viva) per PMDC regulations. A student failing any professional exam must re-appear in that subject. PMDC mandates a minimum of 50% in both written and practical/viva components for passing. Multiple failed subjects in a professional exam may result in year repetition.

Postgraduate Requirements

MPhil students at BUMHS must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.5 as required by HEC. MD and specialist training follow CPSP-mandated requirements and examinations.

BUMHS Academic Honours & Distinctions

BUMHS recognises academic excellence at its annual convocation. Allied health BS students with a CGPA of 3.5 or above graduate With Distinction. MBBS/BDS students who pass all professional exams in first attempt with high percentages may receive merit certificates or gold medals. Programme toppers in MBBS are traditionally honoured at provincial level health department events and BUMHS convocations attended by the Balochistan Governor or Chief Minister.

BUMHS Campus, Teaching Hospitals & Programs

Quetta Campus & Teaching Hospitals

BUMHS is based in Quetta. Its clinical training is conducted at major Quetta teaching hospitals including Bolan Medical Complex (BMC), one of the largest government hospitals in Balochistan, as well as other affiliated facilities. The university campus includes lecture halls, dissection rooms, anatomy labs, biochemistry and physiology labs, a medical library, and residential hostels for students from across Balochistan.

Constituent Colleges

BUMHS is affiliated with several constituent and affiliated medical and dental colleges across Balochistan. Students at affiliated institutions sit for BUMHS professional examinations and receive BUMHS degrees. This makes BUMHS the degree-awarding body for medical and health sciences across much of the province.

Absolute vs Relative Grading at BUMHS

For allied health BS programmes, BUMHS uses absolute grading with fixed percentage cutoffs per the HEC scale. For MBBS/BDS professional exams, PMDC-prescribed pass marks apply. In all cases, a student's performance is evaluated against defined criteria — not relative to the class. This ensures fairness across all batches and constituent colleges affiliated to BUMHS.

How to Check Your GPA at BUMHS

  1. For allied health BS students, access the BUMHS student portal or online examination system using your registration number.
  2. Go to Academic Records → Results to view your semester GPA and CGPA.
  3. MBBS/BDS professional exam results are announced on the BUMHS official website and examination department notice board.
  4. For an official transcript or marksheet (for employment, higher studies, or PMDC license applications), visit the Controller of Examinations at the BUMHS main campus with the applicable fee.
  5. Allied health students seeking HEC scholarship applications should obtain a CGPA-based transcript from their department's academic coordinator.

BUMHS Admission Aggregate & Merit

MBBS/BDS: Aggregate = Entry Test (50%) + Matric % (25%) + FSc Pre-Medical % (25%)

MBBS and BDS admissions at BUMHS and its affiliated colleges are governed by a merit aggregate based on the MDCAT (Medical and Dental College Admission Test) score, Matric marks (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), and FSc Pre-Medical marks. MDCAT is a national entry test mandated by PMDC and PMC. Domicile of Balochistan is required for public quota seats; open merit seats are available to all provinces. Allied health BS programmes use NTS NAT or BUMHS's own entry test in the aggregate formula.
