About Aga Khan University (AKU)

Aga Khan University (AKU) was established in 1983 by His Highness the Aga Khan IV (Shah Karim Al Husseini), the 49th Imam of the Ismaili Muslim community, as a private research university and the first private university in Pakistan. AKU is chartered in Pakistan by a special Act of Parliament (the AKU Act, 1983) and is governed as an autonomous not-for-profit institution. It is the highest-ranked Pakistani university in global university rankings — ranking in the top 400 in the QS World University Rankings — and is universally regarded as Pakistan's best private university and best medical institution.

AKU's main campus is in Karachi's Stadium Road area and includes the AKU Medical College, the AKU Hospital (one of the best hospitals in Asia, consistently ranked among the top hospitals in Asia-Pacific), the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and the Institute for Educational Development (IED). AKU also has international campuses and programmes in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, the UK, and Afghanistan, making it a truly global institution.

AKU is unique in Pakistan for its emphasis on high-quality patient care, evidence-based medicine, and medical research. Its faculty includes internationally trained physicians and researchers, and its clinical departments produce peer-reviewed research published in top international medical journals. AKU Hospital handles some of the most complex medical cases in Pakistan and is the primary referral hospital for rare and difficult diagnoses in the country.

AKU Minimum CGPA Requirements & Probation

All AKU undergraduate students (MBBS, BScN) must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 on the HEC 4.0 scale to remain in good academic standing. However, given AKU's highly competitive environment and the international residency ambitions of its graduates, a CGPA below 3.0 is considered poor performance within the student body. For AKU Institute for Educational Development (IED) postgraduate programmes (MEd, MPhil), the minimum CGPA is 3.0. PhD students across all AKU programmes must maintain at least 3.0 in coursework before advancing to the dissertation phase.

Students who fall below the 2.0 threshold are placed on academic probation and reviewed individually by the faculty. Given AKU's small class sizes and strict standards, probation cases are taken seriously. Students must recover their CGPA within the specified period or may face suspension. AKU uses absolute grading — grades depend on fixed percentage thresholds, not class rank.

LevelMinimum CGPANotes
MBBS / BScN (Undergraduate)2.0HEC minimum; practical threshold much higher for competitive careers
MEd / MPhil (IED Postgraduate)3.0Required throughout programme
PhD (All Programmes)3.0Required in coursework before dissertation

AKU Dean’s List & Academic Distinctions

AKU recognises outstanding academic performance each semester. Students who achieve a semester GPA of 3.5 or above while enrolled in a full course load receive academic merit recognition, recorded on the official transcript. This distinction matters greatly for competitive USMLE residency matching, PLAB applications, and international nursing placements.

At graduation, AKU awards MBBS and BScN degrees With Distinction (CGPA 3.5 or above) and With High Distinction (CGPA 3.75 or above). Gold Medals go to the top-ranked graduate in each programme at the annual AKU Convocation. For IED postgraduate graduates, equivalent merit distinctions apply. These distinctions appear on both the degree certificate and the official transcript, and are recognised by international medical licensing bodies.

AKU Campus & Programmes

MBBS — Pakistan's Most Prestigious Medical Degree

AKU's MBBS programme is widely regarded as the most prestigious medical degree in Pakistan. It is a 5-year programme (plus one year of house job) with an integrated, system-based curriculum modelled on leading North American and European medical schools. AKU MBBS graduates routinely match into highly competitive residency programmes in the USA, Canada, UK, and Australia through USMLE, PLAB, and similar pathways. Locally, AKU graduates are the most preferred candidates for fellowship training at AKU Hospital and in prestigious hospitals in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. AKU accepts only approximately 100 MBBS students per year from tens of thousands of applicants across Pakistan.

BScN — School of Nursing and Midwifery

AKU's School of Nursing and Midwifery offers the BScN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) programme — one of the most rigorous and internationally recognised nursing degrees in Pakistan. AKU nurses are highly sought by hospitals in Pakistan, the Gulf countries, Canada, and the UK. The programme emphasises evidence-based nursing practice, clinical competency in AKU Hospital, and community health nursing. AKU also offers Post-RN BScN, MSc Nursing, and Midwifery programmes for advanced nursing professionals.

Institute for Educational Development (IED)

AKU's Institute for Educational Development (IED), headquartered in Karachi with a campus in Lahore, is Pakistan's premier institution for teacher education and education research. The IED offers MEd, MEd (Hons), and PhD programmes in Education and has trained thousands of master teachers and education leaders who have reformed schools across Pakistan. IED's programmes are particularly influential in the Aga Khan Education Services schools and in government school reform initiatives supported by international development organisations (World Bank, ADB, USAID).

Absolute vs Relative Grading at AKU

AKU uses absolute grading in line with HEC policy and its international accreditation standards. Grades are assigned based on fixed percentage benchmarks — 85% and above earns an A/A+, 80–84% earns an A-, and so on — regardless of how the rest of the class performs. There is no bell-curve adjustment. Every student who scores 85%+ in a subject earns an A regardless of how many students achieve that level.

Absolute grading is particularly important for AKU MBBS students pursuing international licensing exams (USMLE, PLAB). Absolute percentage-based grades translate directly to USMLE preparation benchmarks and allow foreign medical licensing authorities to assess academic performance objectively. AKU faculty are trained in designing assessments where absolute grades accurately reflect clinical and scientific competency rather than relative class performance.

How to Check Your GPA on the AKU Student Portal

AKU students access their official academic records, semester GPA, and CGPA through the university’s student information system. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the AKU official website (aku.edu.pk) and navigate to the student portal or e-learning portal (elearn.aku.edu.pk).
  2. Log in using your AKU student ID and institutional password issued at enrolment.
  3. Navigate to Academic Records → Semester Results / Transcript to view your GPA for each semester and your cumulative CGPA.
  4. For official transcripts required for USMLE, residency matching, PLAB registration, or postgraduate admissions, contact the AKU Registrar’s Office directly for verified document requests.
  5. AKU Registrar issues official transcripts on university letterhead with an authorised signature — the accepted format for all international licensing and residency applications.

AKU Admission Aggregate & Merit Calculator

MBBS Admission: FSc Pre-Medical (90%+) + AKU Entry Test (most competitive in Pakistan)

AKU MBBS admission requires FSc Pre-Medical with exceptional marks (typically 90%+) and excellent performance in the AKU Entry Test which is widely considered the hardest and most comprehensive medical entry test in Pakistan. The test assesses Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, English, and critical thinking. No reserved seats, quotas, or sifarish (connections) affect AKU admissions — it is strictly merit-based, which is part of what makes an AKU degree so prestigious. Partial scholarships and need-based financial assistance are available for deserving students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AKU the best university in Pakistan?

AKU is consistently ranked as Pakistan's highest-ranked university in the QS World University Rankings (top 400 globally) and is universally regarded as the best medical university and the best private university in Pakistan. For medical education specifically, AKU has no peer in Pakistan — its standards of clinical training, research, and graduate outcomes far exceed those of other Pakistani medical universities. For business, LUMS competes with AKU's IED in the social sciences space, and IBA Karachi leads in finance/business.

What is the minimum CGPA at AKU?

AKU follows the standard HEC minimum CGPA of 2.0 for undergraduate programmes (MBBS, BScN). However, given AKU's competitive environment and the international residency/fellowship goals of its students, maintaining a 3.0+ CGPA is practically essential for competitive postgraduate applications. The student body at AKU is so highly selected that the average CGPA of graduates is considerably higher than at other Pakistani universities. For AKU IED postgraduate programmes, the minimum CGPA is 3.0.

Can AKU graduates get residency in the USA or UK?

Yes. AKU MBBS graduates have one of the highest USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 pass rates among Pakistani medical schools and regularly match into US residency programmes (internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, radiology, and other specialties) through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). For the UK, AKU graduates take PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) exams and obtain GMC registration. AKU's teaching in English, its research training, and its standardised examination system make its graduates competitive internationally in a way that most Pakistani medical schools cannot replicate.

Does AKU offer scholarships?

Yes. AKU has a robust need-based financial assistance programme. Approximately 40–50% of AKU students receive some form of financial assistance, ranging from partial fee waivers to full scholarships. AKU's philosophy is that no academically qualified student should be denied admission due to financial constraints, and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) supports the financial assistance pool. The AKU bursary and scholarship applications are assessed separately from admissions; students apply after receiving an offer of admission.
