About Nishtar Medical University
Nishtar Medical University (NMU) is a public medical university in Multan, Punjab, elevated from the long-established Nishtar Medical College — one of the most prominent public medical colleges in southern Punjab. The university takes its name from Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar (1899–1958) — a towering figure of the Pakistan Movement and post-independence governance. Nishtar was a senior leader of the All-India Muslim League, a close associate and confidant of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and served in Pakistan's earliest government as Minister of Posts, Telegraphs, and Communications and later as Governor of Punjab (1947–1949) during one of the most turbulent periods of partition and early nationhood. Naming the hospital — and subsequently the university — after Nishtar was a recognition of his lifelong service to the cause of Pakistan and to the people of the Punjab. NMU is PMC (Pakistan Medical Commission) recognised and fully HEC-chartered, using the HEC 4.0 semester-based grading system for all non-MBBS/BDS programmes.
Multan is one of Pakistan's most historically layered cities — and one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban settlements in the world, with recorded history stretching back over 5,000 years. Known as Madinat al-Awliya (City of Saints), Multan's identity is inseparable from its extraordinary concentration of Sufi shrines. The Shrine of Shah Rukn-e-Alam — a masterpiece of Tughluq-era Islamic architecture completed in 1320 CE, with its massive tilework-adorned dome dominating the Multan skyline — is one of the most recognisable structures in Pakistan. The Shrine of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya, founder of the Suhrawardi Sufi order in the subcontinent and one of the most influential Sufi scholars of the 13th century, is another major pilgrimage site. Multan's bazaars are famous for Chaunsa mangoes — widely considered the finest variety of Pakistani mangoes and among the best in the world — and for blue pottery (kashi tiles and ceramics in distinctive Multan blue-and-white patterns) and soossi fabric. As the administrative capital of South Punjab, Multan is a major regional hub for agriculture, commerce, and services, serving a vast catchment including Vehari, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, and adjacent districts. NMU and Nishtar Hospital provide healthcare services to this enormous, largely rural southern Punjab population.

How to Calculate Your NMU GPA
For Pharm-D, BS Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences students at NMU, semester GPA is the credit-hour-weighted average of grade points earned across all enrolled courses — including laboratory and clinical practicals that carry credit hours.
GPA Formula: GPA = ∑(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ ∑Credit Hours
Example (Pharm-D Year 1 Semester 2): Biochemistry (3 cr, A = 4.00) + Pharmaceutics-I (3 cr, B+ = 3.33) + Pharmacognosy-I (3 cr, A- = 3.67) + Anatomy & Physiology (3 cr, B = 3.00) + Pharmaceutical Chemistry Lab (2 cr, A+ = 4.00) = (12.00 + 9.99 + 11.01 + 9.00 + 8.00) ÷ 14 = 3.57 GPA
How to Calculate Your NMU CGPA
Cumulative GPA at NMU accumulates across all completed semesters. Pharm-D runs over 5 years (10 semesters including internship); BS Allied Health programmes over 4 years (8 semesters); MS/MPH over 4 semesters.
CGPA Formula: CGPA = ∑(Semester GPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours

Frequently Asked Questions
Does MBBS at Nishtar Medical University use GPA? How does the assessment system work?
No. MBBS and BDS at NMU are assessed through the PMC annual professional examination system — not GPA. The MBBS is divided into three professional years: 1st Professional (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry), 2nd Professional (Pathology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine), and Final Professional (Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology). Each professional year is assessed as an annual examination with separate theory and practical papers; pass mark is typically 50% in each paper with specific conditions for the combined theory-practical pass requirement. There is no semester GPA, no 4.0 scale, and no CGPA for MBBS or BDS. Your academic record is expressed in percentage marks per professional examination. This GPA calculator applies only to Pharm-D, Allied Health Sciences, and postgraduate programmes at NMU.
Who was Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar and why is the university named after him?
Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar (1899–1958) was a senior leader of the All-India Muslim League and one of the most important political figures of the Pakistan Movement. Born in Peshawar, he was a close associate and trusted lieutenant of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, serving on the League's Working Committee for years before partition. After the creation of Pakistan in August 1947, Nishtar served in the first Pakistani Cabinet as Minister of Posts, Telegraphs, and Communications under Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan. He subsequently served as Governor of Punjab (1947–1949) during the extraordinarily difficult early years of partition when Punjab was receiving millions of Muslim refugees fleeing India and tens of millions of people were displaced across both sides of the new border. Nishtar's administration of Punjab during this period — managing one of the largest forced migrations in human history — was central to the early stability of the Pakistani state. The naming of Nishtar Hospital (and subsequently Nishtar Medical University) in Multan after him was a recognition of his services to Pakistan and to the people of Punjab specifically. He passed away in 1958 at the age of 59.
Is NMU PMC recognised and valid for medical practice and international licensing?
Yes. Nishtar Medical University is fully recognised by the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) — the federal authority for medical and dental education in Pakistan. NMU MBBS and BDS degrees are eligible for PMC registration allowing medical and dental practice in Pakistan. For international practice: NMU MBBS graduates pursuing medical licensing abroad (USMLE for USA, PLAB for UK, AMC for Australia, DHA/HAAD/MOH for Gulf countries) should verify that NMU is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) at the time of their application — this is a standard prerequisite for most IMG (International Medical Graduate) licensing processes. All PMC-recognised Pakistani medical universities are generally listed; confirm the current status at the time of your application rather than relying on historic information. NMU Pharm-D graduates are eligible for Pharmacy Council of Pakistan (PCP) registration upon completing the mandatory internship.
What is Nishtar Hospital Multan and what career opportunities does it offer NMU graduates?
Nishtar Hospital is one of the largest public tertiary care hospitals in Punjab with over 1,700 beds — the primary referral hospital for all of South Punjab, serving Multan, Vehari, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, and adjacent districts. The hospital has specialist departments covering cardiology, neurosurgery, nephrology, oncology, trauma surgery, burns, paediatrics, and many other disciplines. For NMU clinical students, the high patient volume and case complexity at Nishtar Hospital provide an exceptionally rich training environment. For graduates, Nishtar Hospital itself is a major employer: MBBS graduates pursue house officer and then medical officer positions; Pharm-D graduates enter the hospital pharmacy; Nursing graduates join the nursing staff; Allied Health Sciences graduates work in the MLT, radiology, physiotherapy, and anaesthesia departments. Beyond Nishtar Hospital, Multan's private hospital and diagnostic centre sector is significant, and the broader South Punjab healthcare infrastructure (district hospitals, THQ hospitals, RHCs across a vast agricultural region) provides extensive public sector healthcare employment opportunities for NMU graduates through PPSC health department recruitment.
How do I convert my NMU CGPA to percentage for PPSC or Pharmacy Council registration?
Use the HEC standard formula: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. A CGPA of 3.5 equals 87.5%; a CGPA of 2.9 equals 72.5%. This applies to Pharm-D, BS Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences graduates for PPSC Punjab government recruitment, FPSC federal recruitment, PCP Pharmacy Council registration, and MS/PhD admissions. For MBBS/BDS graduates: your qualification is expressed in professional examination percentage marks — there is no CGPA to convert. Use our CGPA to Percentage converter for instant results.
