GCU’s own official admission page confirms most BS programmes use 20% Matric + 80% Intermediate Part-I, with no entry test counted. Only two programmes weight a test: BSc Electrical Engineering and BS Information Security Engineering Technology use 14% Matric + 56% Intermediate + 30% Test (GCU Test, ECAT, or a PEC-approved equivalent).

GCU Lahore Merit Formula 2027: 20% Matric + 80% Intermediate
GCU’s own official BS admission page confirms the formula that applies to most BS/ADP programmes:
| Component | Weightage |
|---|---|
| Matriculation / O-Level / Equivalent | 20% |
| Intermediate Part-I / DAE / AS-Level / Equivalent | 80% |
| Entry Test | Not counted |
This applies to almost every GCU BS programme, including Computing degree programmes (Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering), BFA, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Electronics and LLB, none of which weight a test score into the merit percentage.
The only two programmes with a different, test-inclusive formula are BSc Electrical Engineering and BS Information Security Engineering Technology, covered in the next section.
GCU Electrical Engineering Formula: 14% Matric + 56% Inter + 30% Test
GCU’s official page describes this formula as a nested blend: the same 20% Matric + 80% Intermediate academic result carries 70% overall weight, with a GCU Test, ECAT or PEC-approved equivalent test carrying the remaining 30%.
| Component | Weightage |
|---|---|
| GCU Test / ECAT / PEC-approved test | 30% |
| Intermediate Part-I (56% of total, i.e. 80% of the 70% academic share) | 56% |
| Matric (14% of total, i.e. 20% of the 70% academic share) | 14% |
Worked out algebraically, this nested description is identical to a flat 14% Matric + 56% Intermediate + 30% Test, which is what the calculator above uses directly.
Minimum eligibility for these two programmes is 60% in the relevant qualification, higher than the general 50% minimum.
How to Calculate Your GCU Aggregate: Step-by-Step Guide
- Convert Matric and Inter Part-I to percentages. Divide obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100.
- Multiply by GCU’s weightage for your programme. Most programmes: Matric × 0.20, Intermediate × 0.80. Electrical Engineering / Info. Security Engg. Tech.: Matric × 0.14, Intermediate × 0.56, Test × 0.30.
- Add the numbers. The total is your GCU aggregate out of 100.
Worked example: most BS programmes
A student scores 950/1100 in Matric and 980/1100 in Intermediate Part-I.
| Component | Marks | Percentage | Weightage | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intermediate Part-I | 980 / 1100 | 89.09% | 80% | 71.27 |
| Matric | 950 / 1100 | 86.36% | 20% | 17.27 |
| Total merit | — | — | 100% | 88.55% |
Try these same numbers in the calculator above, on the general preset, and you will get 88.55%.
Worked example: Electrical Engineering
Same Matric and Inter marks, with a GCU Test/ECAT score of 300/400.
| Component | Percentage | Weightage | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intermediate Part-I | 89.09% | 56% | 49.89 |
| GCU Test / ECAT | 75.00% | 30% | 22.50 |
| Matric | 86.36% | 14% | 12.09 |
| Total merit | — | 100% | 84.48% |
GCU LLB Admission: The LAT Is Pass/Fail, Not Weighted
LLB applicants must qualify the HEC Law Admission Test (LAT) before the application closing date — candidates without a qualifying LAT result, or who sit it after the deadline, are ineligible to apply.
The LAT itself does not carry a percentage weight in the merit calculation. GCU’s own admission page states LLB otherwise follows the same admission requirements as the University’s other BS programmes, meaning the same 20% Matric + 80% Intermediate formula applies once LAT eligibility is met.
A 5% quota is reserved for Lawyers’ Children specifically for the LLB programme.
GCU Hafiz-e-Quran Bonus: +20 Marks
GCU awards 20 bonus marks to Hafiz-e-Quran candidates, added directly to their Intermediate Part-I/DAE/AS-Level obtained marks, within the Open Merit category (there is no separate quota for this).
Candidates must pass an oral Quran-e-Majeed test to claim this bonus. If a candidate does not qualify the oral test, the 20 marks are withdrawn and the candidate is declared failed for this specific category.
GCU Eligibility Criteria 2027 (Minimum Marks by Programme)
These minimums are confirmed directly from GCU’s own BS admission page:
| Programme | Minimum eligibility |
|---|---|
| Most BS / ADP programmes | At least 50% in Intermediate Part-I / DAE / AS-Level |
| BFA (all disciplines) | At least 45% |
| BSc Electrical Engineering | At least 60% |
| BS Information Security Engineering Technology | At least 60% in DAE / FSc (Pre-Engineering) / ICS / equivalent |
Additional confirmed subject rules: BS Physics, Mathematics, Statistics and Electronics require a passed Mathematics result at Intermediate; Pre-Medical or non-Mathematics candidates must pass two extra (non-credit) Mathematics deficiency courses in their first two semesters, at an additional fee. Computing degree programmes (CS, AI, Software Engineering) require at least 50% Intermediate with Mathematics, or a Pre-Medical background with the same deficiency-course route. Pharm-D (5-year) accepts an FSc (Pre-Engineering) background only if Biology was studied and passed as an additional subject.
Quotas: 2% for Special/Disabled candidates, 2% for religious minorities, and 5% for Lawyers’ Children (LLB only). BSc Electrical Engineering, Pharm-D and LLB are not offered under the Overseas Pakistanis quota.
GCU Merit Impact: How Much Is Each Mark Worth?
For most programmes, Intermediate carries four times Matric’s weight. For Electrical Engineering, the test is scored on a smaller scale, so it moves your merit fastest per raw mark.
| Improvement | Most programmes (20:80) | Electrical Engineering (14:56:30) |
|---|---|---|
| +10 marks in Intermediate (out of 1100) | +0.727 points | +0.509 points |
| +10 marks in Matric (out of 1100) | +0.182 points | +0.127 points |
| +10 marks in GCU Test/ECAT (out of 400) | n/a | +0.750 points |
For most GCU programmes, a strong Intermediate Part-I result is by far your biggest lever. For Electrical Engineering, the test carries the most weight per mark, but Intermediate still contributes the largest overall share.
GCU Closing Merit: What Aggregate Do You Need?
There is no single number: closing merit depends on the programme and that year’s applicant pool. Programmes like Computer Science and Business Administration are typically GCU’s most competitive, with other programmes closing lower.
Use the previous cycle’s official closing merit for your programme as your target, then use the required-score tool above to see the Intermediate percentage you’d need at a given Matric score to reach it.
How to Improve Your GCU Merit Score
- Focus on Intermediate Part-I above everything else. At 80% weightage for most programmes, it dwarfs Matric’s effect.
- Check whether your programme needs a test. Only Electrical Engineering and Information Security Engineering Technology weight a test into the formula; LLB requires the LAT only as a pass/fail gate.
- Claim your Hafiz-e-Quran bonus if eligible. It is a straightforward +20 marks added directly to your Intermediate score, subject to passing the oral test.
- Clear your LAT early if applying to LLB. Missing the deadline makes you ineligible regardless of your academic aggregate.
- Plan for deficiency courses if relevant. Pre-Medical or non-Mathematics applicants to certain BS programmes need to budget time and fees for extra Math courses.
- Apply broadly. Consider more than one university so a single programme’s closing merit does not decide your whole year.
Common GCU Aggregate Calculation Mistakes to Avoid
- Adding a test score to a non-Engineering programme’s aggregate. Only Electrical Engineering and Information Security Engineering Technology weight a test.
- Treating the LAT as part of the LLB merit percentage. It is a pass/fail eligibility requirement, not a weighted component.
- Using Intermediate Part-II or full FSc marks instead of Part-I. GCU’s formula specifically uses Part-I marks.
- Assuming every programme shares the same eligibility minimum. BFA (45%) and the two Engineering programmes (60%) differ from the general 50%.
- Treating the estimate as final. Only GCU’s own merit list, published on its admissions portal, is official.
Frequently asked questions
What is the GCU Lahore merit formula?
GCU’s own official page confirms most BS programmes use 20% Matric + 80% Intermediate Part-I, with no test counted. BSc Electrical Engineering and BS Information Security Engineering Technology use 14% Matric + 56% Intermediate + 30% Test instead.
Does GCU count an entry test for most BS programmes?
No. GCU’s own admission page states the 20:80 Matric/Intermediate formula applies to almost every BS programme, including Computing degree programmes, BFA, Physics, Mathematics and LLB, with no test weighted into the percentage.
How is the GCU aggregate calculated?
For most programmes: convert Matric and Intermediate Part-I to percentages, multiply by 0.20 and 0.80, and add. For example, Matric 950/1100 and Intermediate 980/1100 give 88.55%.
What is the GCU Electrical Engineering formula?
14% Matric + 56% Intermediate + 30% Test (GCU Test, ECAT, or a PEC-approved equivalent). GCU’s own page describes this as the 20/80 academic result carrying 70% overall weight plus a 30% test weight, which works out to the same flat 14/56/30 split.
Does the LAT count toward GCU LLB merit?
No. The HEC Law Admission Test (LAT) is a mandatory pass/fail eligibility requirement for LLB, not a weighted part of the merit formula. LLB otherwise uses the same 20% Matric + 80% Intermediate formula as other BS programmes.
What is the GCU Hafiz-e-Quran bonus?
20 bonus marks, added directly to the Intermediate Part-I/DAE/AS-Level obtained marks, within the Open Merit category. Candidates must pass an oral Quran-e-Majeed test; failing it forfeits the bonus and fails the candidate for this category.
What is the minimum eligibility for GCU?
At least 50% in Intermediate Part-I/DAE/AS-Level for most programmes. BFA requires 45%. BSc Electrical Engineering and BS Information Security Engineering Technology require 60%.
How many marks is the GCU Test out of?
GCU does not publish a total for its own test. ECAT, scored out of 400, is an accepted alternative, so this calculator defaults the test total to 400 and lets you change it.
Do Computer Science and AI programmes use a different GCU formula?
No. Computing degree programmes require at least 50% Intermediate with Mathematics (or a Pre-Medical background with deficiency courses) for eligibility, but use the same 20% Matric + 80% Intermediate merit formula as other BS programmes.
What Intermediate percentage do I need to reach a target merit?
For most programmes, subtract your Matric points (Matric % × 0.20) from your target and divide by 0.80. For example, with Matric 950/1100 you already have 17.27 points, so a target of 90% needs an Intermediate percentage of at least 90.91%. Use the required-score tool on this page to do it for your own marks.
What merit do I need to get into GCU?
It depends on the programme and applicant pool that year, so there is no fixed number. Use the previous cycle’s official closing merit for your programme as a target.
Is this the official GCU merit?
No. This is an independent estimator built directly from GCU’s own published admission criteria. Your official merit position is published by GCU on its own admissions portal.
Why is my merit different from the one GCU published?
Common reasons are using Intermediate Part-II instead of Part-I marks, adding a test score to a non-Engineering programme, forgetting the Hafiz-e-Quran bonus if eligible, or rounding. Confirm the exact figures with GCU’s admissions office.
