CIP Merit & Aggregate Calculator — Punjab Residency Program (FCPS / MD / MS / MDS)

Use this free CIP merit calculator to calculate your Central Induction Policy score for Punjab’s postgraduate residency program. Enter your MDCAT, MBBS/BDS degree, university positions, house job and FCPS-I/JCAT details to get your merit score out of 30, based on the formula effective from July 2026 induction onward.

Quick answer

For induction from July 2026 onward, the Central Induction Policy (CIP) score for Punjab’s postgraduate residency program is calculated out of 30 points: MDCAT (2), your MBBS/BDS professional exam aggregate (15), university positions (up to 3), house job (up to 5), and FCPS-I or JCAT (up to 5). Working-experience marks that were part of earlier CIP versions have been removed from this stage. A further change is already notified for January 2027 induction onward — see the policy timeline below.

JCAT percentile bands used here (70+/65-70/60-65) are the more commonly cited figures across trackers; sources vary slightly on the top-band threshold (70th vs 75th percentile). If your percentile is close to a boundary, confirm your exact points with the PRP before relying on this estimate.

CIP Merit Formula (July 2026 Onward): 30 Points

The Central Induction Policy is Punjab’s Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education (SH&MED) Department’s merit system for ranking MBBS/BDS graduates into postgraduate residency training — FCPS, MD, MS and MDS — through the Punjab Residency Program (PRP). For induction from July 2026 onward, per the department’s notification dated 17 March 2026, the score is built additively out of 30 points:

ComponentMaximum pointsBasis
MBBS/BDS professional exams15Combined percentage across all professional exams, including Islamiat & Pakistan Studies
House Job5Completed at parent institute (5) or another recognised Punjab teaching hospital (2.5)
FCPS-I / JCAT5FCPS-I by attempt, or JCAT by percentile band
University Positions30.6 (MBBS) or 0.75 (BDS) per top-3 position, capped at 3
MDCAT2Percentage of your MDCAT score
Total30—

This is an additive points system, not a percentage-weighted formula: each component contributes a fixed number of points on its own scale, and the five are simply added together. That is different from most university merit calculators on this site, which blend Matric, Intermediate and test percentages using independent weightages.

CIP Policy Timeline: What Changed and When

The Central Induction Policy has been revised twice within 2026, and a third revision is already notified for 2027. Knowing which version applies to your induction cycle matters, since the point values and categories differ:

Induction cycleTotal pointsKey features
January 202635Included working-experience marks (up to 5) at BHU/RHC, THQ/DHQ, PESSI, tertiary care and jail hospitals, calculated pro-rata by duration of service
July 2026 (current)30Experience marks discontinued. MDCAT, MBBS/BDS degree, university positions, house job and FCPS-I/JCAT only — the formula this calculator uses
January 2027 onwardNot yet publishedQualifying the Postgraduate Entrance Test (PGET) becomes mandatory; JCAT is discontinued

The January 2027 change is confirmed by the University of Health Sciences (UHS) itself: PGET qualification becomes mandatory for induction into Level-III programmes (MS, MD, MDS, FCPS) from that cycle, with a minimum qualifying percentile of 75 to pass, and JCAT will no longer be conducted or required. What has not yet been published is how PGET fits into the point-by-point merit formula — the department has stated that eligibility and merit will continue to be determined by criteria it separately notifies, which had not been released as of this writing. If you are applying for January 2027 induction or later, treat this calculator’s 30-point breakdown as a reference for the outgoing formula, and check the PRP portal directly for the updated criteria closer to your application.

How to Calculate Your CIP Merit Score: Step-by-Step

  1. Calculate your MDCAT points. Divide your MDCAT score by the total (180 for 2026), multiply by 100 for a percentage, then multiply by 2.
  2. Calculate your degree points. Add your marks across all MBBS/BDS professional exams (including Islamiat & Pakistan Studies), divide by the combined total, convert to a percentage, then multiply by 15.
  3. Add university position points. Count your top-3 positions across all professional exams. Multiply by 0.6 (MBBS) or 0.75 (BDS), capped at 3 points.
  4. Add house job points. 5 points if completed at your parent institute’s teaching hospital, 2.5 at another recognised Punjab teaching hospital, 0 if not yet completed.
  5. Add FCPS-I or JCAT points. FCPS-I: 5/4/3/0 points for a pass on your 1st/2nd/3rd/4th-or-later attempt. JCAT: points by percentile band (see below).
  6. Add all five components. The sum is your CIP merit score out of 30.

Worked example

An MBBS graduate scores 140/180 in MDCAT, 3800/4200 combined in professional exams, holds 2 top-3 university positions, completed house job at their parent institute, and passed FCPS-I on the 1st attempt.

ComponentCalculationPoints
MDCAT140/180 = 77.78% × 21.56
Degree3800/4200 = 90.48% × 1513.57
University Positions2 × 0.61.20
House JobParent institute5.00
FCPS-I1st attempt5.00
Total—26.33 / 30

Try these same numbers in the calculator above and you will get 26.33.

FCPS-I and JCAT: Two Routes to the Same 5 Points

Candidates reach the final 5-point component through one of two separate exams, depending on which body they are applying under:

FCPS Part-1 (College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan)

Attempt passedPoints
1st attempt5
2nd attempt4
3rd attempt3
4th attempt or later0

JCAT (Joint Centralized Admission Test, university route)

JCAT is scored by percentile rather than attempt. Trackers covering this formula largely agree on the shape of the band table, but differ slightly on the top-band cutoff (some cite the 70th percentile, others the 75th):

PercentilePoints
70th percentile and above5
65th to below 70th percentile4
60th to below 65th percentile3
Below 60th percentile0

This calculator uses the 70th-percentile threshold since it is the more commonly cited figure, but if your percentile falls between 70 and 75, confirm your exact points directly with the PRP rather than relying on either version.

From January 2027 induction onward, JCAT is being discontinued and replaced by the mandatory PGET, per UHS’s own notification — see the policy timeline above.

House Job and University Positions

House Job (up to 5 points)

Completing your mandatory one-year house job at the same teaching hospital attached to your parent medical or dental college earns the full 5 points. Completing it at a different recognised Punjab teaching hospital, including for foreign graduates, earns 2.5 points.

University Positions (up to 3 points)

Top-3 university-level positions (not college-level) in any professional exam count toward this component. MBBS graduates earn 0.6 points per position; BDS graduates earn 0.75 points per position, since BDS has fewer professional exams overall. Either way, the component is capped at 3 points regardless of how many positions you hold.

Who CIP Applies To

The Central Induction Policy governs admission into Level-III postgraduate residency training — FCPS, MD, MS and MDS — at public-sector teaching institutions in Punjab, administered through the Punjab Residency Program (PRP) under the SH&MED Department. It applies to MBBS and BDS graduates who have completed (or are completing) their mandatory house job, and covers both University-route (JCAT) and College-route (FCPS-I) candidates within the same 30-point scale.

How Much Does Each Point Move Your Rank?

Because the CIP scale is compact (30 points total, in increments as fine as 0.01), a difference that looks small in percentage terms can represent a large number of candidates on a dense merit list.

ChangeEffect on total
FCPS-I pass on 1st attempt instead of 2nd+1.00 point
House job at parent institute instead of elsewhere+2.50 points
+1 additional top-3 university position (MBBS)+0.60 points
+5 percentage points in professional exam aggregate+0.75 points
+10 marks in MDCAT (out of 180)+0.11 points

House job placement and your FCPS-I/JCAT result carry the most leverage per decision you actually control at this stage, since your MDCAT and Matric/FSc-era marks are already fixed by the time you are applying for residency.

How to Improve Your CIP Merit Score

  • Aim for parent-institute house job. At 2.5 points more than an outside placement, this is one of the largest single swings available within your control.
  • Attempt FCPS-I early. Passing on the 1st attempt is worth a full point more than a 2nd-attempt pass, and 2 points more than a 3rd-attempt pass.
  • Pursue university positions during MBBS/BDS. Even a single top-3 position adds 0.6 to 0.75 points, and the cap is generous enough that most candidates never reach it.
  • Do not neglect your professional exam aggregate. At 15 of 30 points, it is the single largest component and the one most under your control over the full degree.
  • Track the policy timeline. If you are applying for January 2027 induction or later, confirm the updated PGET-based criteria directly with the PRP before relying on the 30-point formula here.

Common CIP Calculation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the January 2026 (35-point) formula for a later induction. Experience marks were discontinued from July 2026 onward — do not add them back in.
  • Counting college-level positions as university positions. Only university-level top-3 positions count toward the 3-point cap.
  • Assuming NAT, MDCAT-only or other tests substitute for FCPS-I/JCAT. This final 5-point component is specifically FCPS-I or JCAT, not any other test.
  • Forgetting Islamiat and Pakistan Studies marks when totalling professional exam marks and totals for the degree component.
  • Assuming the JCAT top-band cutoff is settled. Sources disagree slightly on whether it is the 70th or 75th percentile — confirm if you are near that boundary.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CIP merit formula for 2026?

For induction from July 2026 onward, the score is out of 30 points: MDCAT (2), MBBS/BDS professional exams (15), university positions (up to 3), house job (up to 5) and FCPS-I or JCAT (up to 5).

What happened to experience marks in the CIP formula?

Working-experience marks at primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities, worth up to 5 points, were discontinued from July 2026 induction onward. The January 2026 induction still used a 35-point formula that included these experience marks.

Is the CIP formula changing again after 2026?

Yes. From January 2027 induction onward, qualifying the Postgraduate Entrance Test (PGET), conducted by the University of Health Sciences, becomes mandatory and JCAT is discontinued. The full revised points breakdown for this stage has not yet been published.

How are university positions scored in CIP?

MBBS graduates get 0.6 points per top-3 position in each professional exam, and BDS graduates get 0.75 points per position, capped at 3 points overall.

How many points is house job worth in CIP?

5 points for completing house job at the same teaching hospital attached to your parent medical or dental college, and 2.5 points for completing it at another recognised Punjab teaching hospital.

What is the difference between FCPS-I and JCAT?

Both lead to the same 5-point component. FCPS-I (College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan) is scored by attempt number: 5/4/3/0 points for a pass on the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th-or-later attempt. JCAT (the university route) is scored by percentile band instead.

Is this the official CIP merit score?

No. This is an independent estimator built from the Central Induction Policy formula as widely reported and cross-checked across multiple sources, not copied from any single one. Your official merit position is published by the Punjab Residency Program on its official portal.

How this page was checked. The July-2026, 30-point CIP formula (MDCAT 2, MBBS/BDS degree 15, university positions 3, house job 5, FCPS-I/JCAT 5) is corroborated across multiple independent CIP-calculator trackers and is attributed by them to the SH&MED notification dated 17 March 2026. The January-2026 (35-point, experience-inclusive) version and the discontinuation of experience marks are corroborated by news coverage (Dawn.com) and by tracker sites covering the earlier cycle. The January-2027 PGET mandate, its 75th-percentile pass threshold and JCAT’s discontinuation are confirmed directly from the University of Health Sciences’ own PGET admissions page and corroborated by news coverage of the July 2026 Post Graduate Admission Committee decision; the exact points breakdown for that stage was not available from any source at the time of writing. The JCAT percentile-band top cutoff (70th vs 75th percentile) is disclosed as an open discrepancy between trackers rather than resolved with false confidence. We attempted to locate a single official PDF notification directly on the PRP and SH&MED portals; only an older, superseded 2020-era induction policy document was directly accessible, so the current formula here rests on the news-and-tracker corroboration described above rather than a single primary PDF. This site is independent and is not affiliated with the Government of the Punjab, SH&MED, PRP or UHS.
