How to Convert CGPA to Percentage in Pakistan (HEC Formula)
Converting CGPA to percentage in Pakistan uses a simple formula approved by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Since Pakistani universities predominantly use a 4.0 grading scale, the formula divides your CGPA by 4.0 and multiplies by 100:
Standard HEC Formula (Forward)
Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100
Example: CGPA 3.5 → (3.5 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 87.5%
Reverse Formula (Percentage → CGPA)
CGPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × 4.0
Example: 80% → (80 ÷ 100) × 4.0 = 3.20 CGPA

When Do You Need CGPA to Percentage Conversion?
There are several specific situations where Pakistani students need to convert their CGPA to a percentage:
- Job applications: Many Pakistani employers — especially government departments, banks, and traditional industries — use percentage-based qualification criteria. When forms ask for "% in graduation," your HEC-equivalent percentage is the answer.
- Foreign university admissions: US, UK, Australian, and European universities often require percentage equivalents for graduate applications. Admission teams use the percentage alongside WES or other equivalence evaluation services.
- Scholarship applications (HEC, Fulbright, Chevening, DAAD): Most scholarship forms ask for "division" (First/Second/Distinction) or percentage equivalent. The HEC formula gives the accepted standard answer.
- CSS & PMS competitive exams: Pakistan's civil services exams require educational qualifications stated in percentage. The standard HEC formula is the recognised conversion method.
- HEC Equivalence Certificate: When you need an HEC equivalence certificate for your degree — for foreign education recognition, immigration, or overseas employment — your CGPA is converted to percentage using the standard formula in the official certificate.
- Graduate admissions within Pakistan: Programs at NUST, LUMS, IBA, and COMSATS for MS/MBA often display admission criteria in percentage terms. A 3.0 CGPA = 75% meets First Division and is the common minimum for most programs.
Does Every Pakistani University Use the Same Conversion Formula?
⚠️ Important: The formula Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100 is the HEC standard and is accepted by most Pakistani institutions and government agencies. However, a few universities — notably LUMS and UET Lahore — may use slightly different internal conversion scales for their own equivalence letters. For official external purposes (job applications, scholarship forms, government documents), always use the HEC formula. If your university issues its own equivalence letter, use that instead of a self-calculated percentage.
CGPA to Percentage for 10.0 Scale (India / UGC)
If you're from an Indian university or a Pakistani university using the 10.0 scale (rare), the conversion formula is different. The UGC (University Grants Commission of India) formula is: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, an 8.0 CGPA on a 10.0 scale = 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%. Our main calculator supports the 10.0 scale — select it from the scale tabs.
CGPA Percentage FAQs
The HEC (Higher Education Commission) approved formula is: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. This is the standard method recognised by Pakistani universities, government agencies, and scholarship committees. The reverse formula is: CGPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × 4.0.
3.5 CGPA = 87.5% using the HEC formula: (3.5 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 87.5%. This falls in the Distinction category and is considered excellent academic performance. It qualifies for HEC Indigenous Fellowships and most competitive scholarship programs.
3.7 CGPA = 92.5% using the HEC formula: (3.7 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 92.5%. This is an outstanding result — in the upper Distinction category. Students with 3.7+ CGPA are strong candidates for Fulbright scholarships, gold medals, and fully funded overseas scholarships.
3.3 CGPA = 82.5% using the formula: (3.3 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 82.5%. This falls solidly in the First Division range. It's competitive for corporate graduate trainee programs (P&G, Unilever, Shell require ~3.3+), MS admissions, and HEC scholarships.
3.0 CGPA = 75% using the formula: (3.0 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 75%. This is the minimum threshold for First Division. It's the generally accepted minimum for most HEC scholarship programs, CSS/PMS applications, and many corporate job applications in Pakistan.
2.7 CGPA = 67.5% using the formula: (2.7 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 67.5%. This is Second Division territory. Some tech companies (especially startups) accept 2.7+, but most MNCs set their minimum at 3.0. It qualifies for MS admission at many Pakistani universities which require a minimum 2.5 CGPA.
2.5 CGPA = 62.5% using the formula: (2.5 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 62.5%. This is the minimum for the HEC Indigenous 5000 Fellowship scholarship. It's in the upper Second Division range — enough to graduate but not competitive for most employer-driven shortlisting processes.
2.0 CGPA = 50% using the formula: (2.0 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 50%. This is the absolute minimum CGPA for undergraduate degree completion as per HEC guidelines. A CGPA below 2.0 places a student on academic probation. Most employers set their minimum significantly higher (2.5–3.0+).
To achieve a CGPA of 3.0, you need to maintain an average of 75% across all your courses throughout your degree. Using the reverse formula: CGPA = (75 ÷ 100) × 4.0 = 3.0. In practical terms, this means consistently scoring in the B or B+ range in your coursework at most Pakistani universities.
4.0 CGPA = 100% — a perfect academic score. Achieving a 4.0 CGPA requires earning the highest grade (A or A+) in every course throughout your entire degree. Students with a 4.0 CGPA are typically awarded the university gold medal or Chancellor's Medal at graduation ceremonies in Pakistan.
Most do, but not all. The HEC standard formula (Percentage = CGPA ÷ 4.0 × 100) is used by the vast majority of Pakistani universities and is the accepted standard for government and scholarship applications. However, LUMS and some other institutions may use their own internal conversion for equivalence letters. For official external use, always apply the HEC formula unless your university provides a specific equivalent in writing.
80% equals a CGPA of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale, calculated as: CGPA = (80 ÷ 100) × 4.0 = 3.2. This is solidly in First Division territory — a strong result that qualifies for most corporate jobs, MS admissions, and some competitive scholarships in Pakistan.
Yes — a 3.5 CGPA (87.5%) is excellent in Pakistan's job market. It places you in the Distinction category, qualifies you for HEC scholarships, makes you competitive for top MNC graduate trainee positions, and is well above the minimum for MS/PhD admissions at NUST, LUMS, COMSATS, and IBA. For the most prestigious Fulbright scholarships, 3.5+ is the sweet spot.
